EVALUATING THE IMPACT OF STUDENT LOAN FOR COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION STUDENT (A CASE STUDY OF TARABA STATE UNIVERSITY, JALINGO)

Abstract

This study examined the role of student loans in enhancing access to higher education and academic performance among Computer Science students at Taraba State University. A cross-sectional survey research design was adopted to guide the investigation. A structured questionnaire was developed to collect relevant data from a sample of 333 respondents, who were selected using a simple random sampling technique. The data collected were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 27. Descriptive statistics were used to present the responses, while hypotheses were tested using a one-sample t-test. The findings indicated that student loans significantly improved students’ access to higher education, particularly for those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Many respondents affirmed that the availability of student loans made it possible for them to enroll and remain in the university. Furthermore, the study revealed a positive relationship between access to student loans and academic performance, as loans enabled students to purchase study materials and focus on their studies without the distraction of financial stress. However, the study also identified challenges in the application and repayment processes, including lack of adequate information, complex procedures, and limited post-graduation support. The study concluded that student loans play a vital role in promoting educational equity and academic success.

 

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The cost of higher education has become a major concern for students, families, and governments worldwide. Across the globe, the price of obtaining a university degree has steadily increased, and Nigeria is no exception to this global trend. This rising cost of education, especially in public institutions, has made it increasingly difficult for students, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds, to afford the tuition fees, textbooks, and other necessary academic materials required to pursue their studies. Many students find themselves facing significant financial barriers that hinder their access to education, ultimately limiting their opportunities to improve their lives through higher education. The situation is exacerbated for students in fields such as Computer Science, where the cost of essential resources such as textbooks and access to technology can be prohibitively expensive. Consequently, this financial strain often has adverse effects on students’ academic performance and can prevent many from reaching their full potential (Abubakar, 2023).

In Nigeria, where public universities provide the primary platform for higher education, the costs of education have risen sharply in recent years. This has created a gap between the number of students who wish to pursue a degree and the number of those who can afford the financial requirements. As a result, many students are forced to abandon their education or settle for suboptimal institutions that may not provide the same level of academic quality and resources. To address this issue, the Nigerian government has explored several initiatives aimed at alleviating the financial burdens on students, including the introduction of student loans. These loans are designed to support students who might otherwise struggle to afford the expenses associated with university education (Ayeni, 2023).

Student loans, particularly in the context of Nigeria, are structured to offer financial assistance to students during their studies, with the promise of repayment after graduation when students are more likely to have a stable income. This type of loan system is intended to reduce the barriers to higher education and increase the number of students who can access university education. By providing financial support during the course of their studies, student loans have the potential to level the playing field, enabling students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to attend university and complete their degrees. However, despite the obvious benefits of student loans, they also bring with them certain challenges. For one, the successful implementation of such loans depends on the availability of adequate funding, a robust repayment system, and a well-organized administrative structure to ensure that loans reach students in need (Ayeni, 2024).

One of the universities affected by these financial challenges is Taraba State University (TSU), located in Jalingo, the capital city of Taraba State, Nigeria. TSU is known for its commitment to providing quality higher education in various fields, including Computer Science, which has become increasingly important in today’s technologically driven world. The university has seen a growing demand for Computer Science programs, as more students seek to gain the skills necessary for careers in the digital economy. This growth is in response to the expanding role of technology in sectors such as banking, healthcare, education, and telecommunications. As a result, there is an increasing need for graduates who are equipped with the technical skills required to address the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital age (Amaechi, Ayeni, & Madu, 2019).

However, despite the growing demand for Computer Science education, many students at TSU face significant financial challenges in accessing the resources they need to pursue their studies. For instance, students often struggle to afford the necessary textbooks, software tools, and equipment essential for their coursework. The financial pressures extend beyond tuition fees, as students must also cover the costs of living, which can vary greatly depending on their personal circumstances. Given the rising costs associated with higher education, it is not uncommon for students to abandon their academic aspirations or delay their studies in the face of financial hardship. This situation is particularly pronounced in the field of Computer Science, where practical learning and access to technology are essential components of the curriculum. Without adequate financial resources, students may be unable to take part in hands-on learning experiences, internships, or practical projects that are crucial for their academic and professional development (Asaju & Ayeni, 2020).

In response to these challenges, the introduction of student loans has been seen as a potential solution to help mitigate the financial burden on students. The Nigerian government, through various initiatives, has sought to provide student loans as a means of increasing access to higher education. These loans are intended to offer students the financial support they need to complete their studies, with the understanding that repayment will occur after graduation, when they are more likely to have a stable income. While the concept of student loans offers significant promise in terms of expanding access to education, there remain concerns about the effectiveness of such loans, particularly in terms of their ability to reach students in need and the long-term implications for students’ financial stability after graduation (Ayeni, Sani, & Uzoigwe, 2019).

At Taraba State University, the availability of student loans is an important factor that could potentially increase the accessibility of higher education for students in the Computer Science department. As demand for technology-related degrees rises, it is essential to ensure that students are not hindered by financial constraints that limit their ability to succeed in their chosen fields. The implementation of student loans could provide the necessary financial support for students to cover their tuition fees, textbooks, and technology requirements, thereby enhancing their academic experience and performance. However, the effectiveness of these loans in improving students’ educational outcomes is still unclear. The impact of student loans on students’ academic performance, particularly in fields such as Computer Science, where access to technology and resources plays a crucial role, requires thorough investigation (Ayeni, Sani, Idris, & Uzoigwe, 2019).

This study aims to evaluate the impact of student loans on the educational experience and performance of Computer Science students at Taraba State University. The research will focus on understanding how student loans have affected students’ ability to access educational resources, including textbooks, software, and other essential materials for their studies. Furthermore, the study will examine the extent to which financial support through loans has improved students’ academic performance, including their ability to complete assignments, participate in practical learning, and engage in extracurricular activities that are vital for their personal and professional growth. By investigating these factors, this study will contribute valuable insights into the role of student loans in enhancing access to higher education and improving academic outcomes for students in Nigeria (Ayeni, Tusayi, Joseph, & Obatayo, 2024).

 

1.2       Statement of the Problem

The increasing cost of higher education has placed a significant financial burden on students, especially those in fields like Computer Science, where access to resources such as textbooks, software, and technology is crucial for academic success. In Nigeria, this financial strain has resulted in a situation where many students are unable to fully participate in their academic programs, potentially impacting their performance and overall learning experience. Despite the growing importance of fields such as Computer Science, many students at Taraba State University (TSU) are hindered by financial constraints, limiting their ability to access essential academic resources (Amaechi, Ayeni, & Madu, 2019).

In an attempt to alleviate these financial barriers, student loans have been introduced by both government and private institutions in Nigeria. These loans are designed to provide financial support to students, enabling them to complete their education without being hindered by financial limitations. However, while student loans are seen as a potential solution, there are gaps in existing research concerning their impact on students’ academic experiences and performance. Previous studies have examined student loans in various contexts; however, there remains limited research on the specific effects of student loans on students in fields like Computer Science, where the need for access to technology and other resources is particularly critical (Ayeni, 2024).

Moreover, while student loans are becoming more widely available, the process of loan distribution and the effectiveness of these loans in enhancing academic outcomes are still not well understood. Existing studies have often focused on broader educational challenges without delving into the specifics of how student loans are influencing students’ ability to perform academically in technology-driven fields. Additionally, the repayment terms and conditions attached to these loans raise concerns about their long-term impact on students’ financial stability post-graduation, which has not been adequately addressed in the context of Nigerian universities (Ayeni, Sani, & Uzoigwe, 2019).

In the case of TSU, a university experiencing growing demand for Computer Science education, there is a clear need for a study that evaluates how student loans affect the academic performance of students within this specific department. Despite the potential benefits of student loans, there is a lack of research that assesses how these loans influence students’ access to technology, participation in practical learning, and their overall academic outcomes. This study seeks to fill this gap by providing an in-depth analysis of the impact of student loans on the academic performance and experience of Computer Science students at TSU (Ayeni, Sani, Idris, & Uzoigwe, 2019).

By addressing these gaps, the research will contribute valuable insights into how student loans can be improved to better serve students in critical fields such as Computer Science.

1.3 Objective of the Study

The primary objectives of this study are as follows:

  1. To assess the impact of student loans on the academic performance of Computer Science students at Taraba State University, Jalingo.
  2. To evaluate the role of student loans in improving the access to education for Computer Science students at Taraba State University.
  3. To identify the challenges faced by Computer Science students in accessing and repaying student loans at Taraba State University.

1.4 Research Questions

The following research questions guide this study:

  1. How do student loans affect the academic performance of Computer Science students at Taraba State University?
  2. In what ways do student loans improve access to education for Computer Science students at Taraba State University?
  3. What challenges do Computer Science students face in accessing and repaying student loans at Taraba State University?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

This study tests the following hypotheses:

  1. There is no significant positive relationship between the availability of student loans and the academic performance of Computer Science students at Taraba State University.
  2. Student loans do not significantly improve access to higher education for Computer Science students at Taraba State University.
  3. There are no significant challenges in accessing and repaying student loans among Computer Science students at Taraba State University.

1.6       Significance of the Study

This study holds substantial significance for multiple stakeholders within the education sector, including policymakers, academic institutions, and students. For policymakers, the findings of this research will offer crucial insights into the effectiveness of student loan programs in enhancing access to higher education and supporting academic achievement. Given the increasing costs associated with university education, particularly in fields such as Computer Science, student loans represent a potential solution to alleviate financial constraints. Policymakers will benefit from understanding how well these loans are achieving their intended goals, such as increasing enrollment in critical fields and improving academic performance. The study will also provide data on the challenges students face in accessing and utilizing these loans, which can be used to inform future reforms aimed at making student loan programs more effective and equitable. By identifying the strengths and weaknesses in the current system, this research could guide the development of policies that better address the needs of students across Nigeria, particularly those in specialized and resource-intensive fields like Computer Science (Ayeni, 2024).

For academic institutions, particularly Taraba State University, the study’s findings will be instrumental in identifying areas of improvement in student loan administration. While many universities in Nigeria offer student loans, there is often a lack of comprehensive data on how these programs are functioning on the ground. This research will provide TSU with valuable information on the experiences of students who have received loans, allowing the institution to assess whether its existing loan schemes are meeting students’ needs. Furthermore, the results could highlight gaps in the administration process, such as delays in disbursement or lack of sufficient support for loan recipients, which could be addressed to enhance the overall student experience. The data generated will inform the university’s approach to financial aid and support services, ultimately contributing to a more robust system for helping students finance their education (Amaechi, Ayeni, & Madu, 2019).

For students, particularly those studying in the Computer Science department at TSU, the significance of this study cannot be overstated. By examining the impact of student loans, this research will empower students to make more informed decisions about their financial options. With a clearer understanding of how loans affect their academic performance and overall experience, students will be better equipped to manage their finances, plan for repayment, and navigate the challenges of higher education. Moreover, the study could serve as a resource for students to advocate for better loan conditions or more effective support services, ensuring that their academic goals are not hindered by financial difficulties (Ayeni, Sani, & Uzoigwe, 2019). Ultimately, the findings will help foster a more informed and proactive student body that is better prepared to succeed in their studies and future careers.

1.7       Scope of the Study

This study focuses specifically on the students of the Computer Science department at Taraba State University in Jalingo, Taraba State. It is limited to evaluating the impact of student loans on their academic performance, access to education, and experiences with loan repayment. The study will cover the 2024/2025 academic session, as it seeks to gather contemporary data on the current student loan policies and their effects. Additionally, the study will primarily consider Nigerian student loan programs available to undergraduates and their relationship to student success in the field of Computer Science.

The study does not extend to students in other disciplines or those enrolled in other higher education institutions within the state or country. It will focus solely on the impact of student loans within the context of the Computer Science department at Taraba State University.
