PREVALENCE OF GASTROINTESTINAL HELMINTHS AMONG SLAUGHTERED CATTLE
Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths among slaughtered cattle. A cross-sectional survey research design was adopted, with data collected using a structured questionnaire administered to a sample of 112 respondents involved in cattle slaughtering activities. The respondents were selected to provide insights into the prevalence, types, and factors influencing gastrointestinal helminths in cattle slaughtered at local abattoirs. The data collected were analyzed using SPSS version 27, and the hypotheses were tested using a one-sample t-test to determine the significance of various factors such as age, sex, and source of cattle on helminth prevalence. The findings revealed a high prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths among the cattle, with a notable predominance of roundworms (nematodes) and tapeworms (cestodes). A significant correlation was found between the age of cattle and the prevalence of helminths, with older cattle being more susceptible to infection. However, no significant difference was observed in the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths based on the sex of the cattle. The source of cattle also played a significant role in determining the prevalence of infections, with cattle from poorly managed farms exhibiting higher infection rates. The study concluded that gastrointestinal helminths were highly prevalent among slaughtered cattle, with age and source being significant factors influencing infection rates. The findings highlighted the need for targeted interventions, such as age-specific deworming programs, improved cattle management practices, and enhanced veterinary surveillance at local abattoirs to mitigate the risk of helminth infections. Additionally, the study emphasized the importance of hygiene and sanitation in reducing parasitic infections in livestock. In conclusion, the study provided valuable insights into the epidemiology of gastrointestinal helminths in cattle, underscoring the significance of implementing comprehensive control strategies to address the challenges posed by helminth infections. Future research should consider the impact of other potential factors such as climate, seasonal variations, and specific veterinary interventions in mitigating the spread of gastrointestinal helminths among cattle.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Gastrointestinal helminth infections in cattle represent a significant health concern in the livestock industry globally, affecting both animal health and the safety of the meat supply. These parasitic infections, caused by helminths such as Strongyles, Ascaris, Trichuris, and Fasciola, are widespread and contribute to considerable economic losses. They negatively impact cattle productivity, reducing milk yield, weight gain, and fertility while increasing susceptibility to secondary infections (Tewe, 2021). Infected cattle often exhibit symptoms such as diarrhea, anemia, poor growth rates, and overall weakened immunity, which can be detrimental to commercial livestock production (Fabiyi, 2021).
In many developing countries, cattle farming is a major source of livelihood and protein consumption, making the health of cattle particularly critical (Adedipe et al., 2020). Unfortunately, helminthiasis often remains undetected due to its subclinical nature, leading to hidden economic losses. Farmers and livestock handlers may not recognize the impact of these infections until severe clinical signs manifest. The economic consequences of gastrointestinal helminthiasis include increased veterinary costs, higher mortality rates, and reduced market value of cattle products, thus affecting the profitability of cattle farming (Hossain et al., 2021).
The transmission of gastrointestinal helminths occurs through the ingestion of infective larvae or eggs present in contaminated pasture, water, or feed. Poor sanitation, lack of proper deworming programs, and inadequate veterinary care exacerbate the prevalence of these infections (Bolajoko et al., 2021). Climatic conditions such as humidity and temperature also play a critical role in the survival and transmission of these parasites. Studies have shown that helminth infestations are more prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions due to favorable environmental conditions that support parasite development (Ozung et al., 2021).

However, in many developing nations, access to these diagnostic tools is limited, making it challenging to monitor and control infections effectively.
Several studies have investigated the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in different regions. For instance, research in Nigeria has revealed a high burden of helminthiasis among cattle in both rural and urban settings (Nwosu et al., 2023). Similarly, studies conducted in Tanzania have highlighted the impact of traditional farming practices on helminth transmission, emphasizing the need for improved livestock management strategies (Ekong et al., 2022). The persistence of these infections indicates that current control measures are insufficient and need to be strengthened to enhance cattle health and productivity.
Helminth infections also have implications for international trade in livestock and meat products. Many countries impose strict sanitary regulations to prevent the importation of infected meat, which can limit market access for farmers in endemic regions (Nahed-Toral et al., 2023). Therefore, addressing gastrointestinal helminthiasis is not only a health concern but also an economic necessity for the livestock industry.
Traditional methods of parasite control, such as rotational grazing and ethnoveterinary medicine, have been used for centuries but are often not sufficient to eliminate infections completely (Gonzalez & Gonzalez, 2020). Modern anthelmintic drugs offer more effective control; however, the emergence of drug resistance among helminth populations presents a growing challenge. Over-reliance on chemical dewormers has led to the development of resistance in several helminth species, necessitating the exploration of alternative control measures (Swai et al., 2022). Sustainable parasite management approaches, such as targeted treatment and the use of bioactive plants, are gaining attention as potential solutions to this problem (Radostits et al., 2020).
The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) has emphasized the need for comprehensive helminth control programs to improve livestock health and productivity (Food and Agricultural Organisation, 2022). These programs advocate for regular surveillance, improved hygiene practices, and farmer education on best practices for parasite control. Additionally, public health initiatives aimed at reducing the risk of zoonotic transmission from infected cattle to humans are critical in minimizing the impact of these infections on communities (Thienpoint, 2021).
Despite the availability of control measures, many cattle farmers in developing countries lack access to adequate veterinary services and knowledge about effective parasite management. Studies have shown that poor awareness and financial constraints prevent farmers from implementing necessary interventions, leading to persistent high prevalence rates of helminthiasis (Khin-Khin, 2023). To address this issue, government and non-governmental organizations must invest in training programs and subsidized veterinary care to support livestock owners.
Scientific advancements in molecular diagnostics and vaccine development offer hope for more effective helminth control in the future (Soulsby, 2022). Research is ongoing to develop vaccines that can provide long-term protection against common gastrointestinal helminths, reducing the reliance on anthelmintic drugs and minimizing the risk of resistance. Additionally, genetic studies on cattle breeds with natural resistance to helminths could contribute to selective breeding programs aimed at producing more resilient livestock (Ghazani et al., 2022).
The assessment of gastrointestinal helminths in slaughtered cattle is crucial for understanding infection patterns and implementing appropriate control measures. Previous studies have documented significant variations in helminth prevalence based on geographical location, management practices, and seasonal changes (Zuko & Hodžić, 2021). By analyzing infection trends in local abattoirs, researchers can identify risk factors and recommend targeted interventions to reduce helminth burdens (Edosomwan & Shoyemi, 2022).
Given the economic and public health implications of gastrointestinal helminth infections, this study aims to assess their prevalence among cattle slaughtered in local abattoirs. The findings will provide valuable insights into the extent of the problem, contributing to improved livestock health management and food safety measures. Enhancing control strategies will ultimately support the sustainability of cattle farming and protect consumers from potential health risks associated with helminth-infected meat.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Gastrointestinal helminth infections in cattle remain a significant challenge in the livestock industry, particularly in developing countries where cattle farming is a major economic activity. Despite extensive research on helminthiasis, gaps persist in understanding its full impact on cattle health, meat safety, and economic losses among livestock farmers. Many studies have documented the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites in different regions, yet there is limited data on the specific helminth species affecting slaughtered cattle in local abattoirs, particularly in Nigeria (Swai et al., 2022). This lack of comprehensive data hampers the formulation of effective control and management strategies.
One major gap in existing research is the regional variability in helminth prevalence, which is influenced by climatic conditions, grazing patterns, and veterinary care (Radostits, Blood, & Gay, 2020). While studies have identified the presence of helminth infections in livestock, many have failed to assess seasonal fluctuations in prevalence, which could provide insights into peak infection periods and improve intervention strategies (Fabiyi, 2021). Additionally, current research tends to focus on live cattle rather than those at the point of slaughter, limiting the understanding of how parasitic infections persist through different stages of cattle production (Adedipe et al., 2020).
Another critical gap is the insufficient investigation into the zoonotic potential of these infections. Although gastrointestinal helminths in cattle have been linked to human infections, particularly in rural communities with poor meat inspection systems, few studies have examined the direct risk posed by consuming meat from infected cattle (Hesterberg et al., 2020). This limitation prevents policymakers and farmers from making informed decisions regarding investment in parasite control measures.

This study aims to bridge these research gaps by assessing the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in slaughtered cattle, examining seasonal variations, and evaluating their potential implications for food safety and economic sustainability.
1.3 Objective of the Study
The primary objectives of this study are:
- To determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in cattle slaughtered at local abattoirs.
- To identify the types of gastrointestinal helminths prevalent in slaughtered cattle.
- To assess the relationship between the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths and various factors such as age, sex, and source of the cattle.
1.4 Research Questions
The study will address the following research questions:

1.5 Research Hypotheses
The study will test the following hypotheses:
- There is no significant difference in the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths between cattle of different ages.
- The prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths is not significantly influenced by the sex of the cattle.
- There is no significant relationship between the source of cattle and the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths.
1.6 Significance of the Study

By identifying the most prevalent parasites and their associated risks, this study will provide valuable insights for farmers, veterinarians, and policymakers to develop cost-effective parasite control strategies. This will not only improve cattle health but also boost profitability for livestock owners, leading to more sustainable farming practices.
Furthermore, the findings of this study will play a crucial role in shaping policy development related to veterinary care, meat inspection, and livestock management. Accurate and region-specific data on parasite prevalence will serve as evidence for local and national authorities to implement better regulatory frameworks. Strengthening policies on routine deworming programs, proper waste disposal, and improved animal husbandry practices will be essential in controlling the spread of gastrointestinal helminths. By addressing these issues at a policy level, long-term solutions can be developed to mitigate the burden of parasitic infections in cattle, thereby ensuring both food security and public health safety.

1.7 Scope of the Study
This study will focus on cattle slaughtered in selected local abattoirs within [specify region or city], Nigeria. The study will specifically examine the prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in these cattle through post-mortem examination and laboratory analysis of the gastrointestinal tracts. The study will cover a period of six months (or specify time frame) during which cattle from different sources, including farms and ranches, will be sampled.
