Abstract

The study focused on investigating infection control practices in the labor ward of Asaba Specialist Hospital. A quantitative survey research design was adopted to gather data from a sample of 120 respondents using a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed to assess various aspects of infection control practices, including hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, and adherence to protocols. The collected data were analyzed using t-tests to test the hypotheses formulated. The results indicated significant correlations between adherence to infection control protocols and patient outcomes, as well as improved infection control practices leading to reduced rates of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) among patients in the labor ward. Additionally, the study found noticeable reductions in the incidence of HAIs and improved maternal and neonatal health outcomes when infection control measures were diligently followed. In conclusion, the findings underscore the importance of stringent adherence to infection control protocols in healthcare settings, particularly in labor wards, to enhance patient safety and health outcomes. Based on the results, recommendations are made for the implementation of robust infection control measures, including regular hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, proper PPE usage, and respiratory hygiene practices. These recommendations aim to mitigate the risk of HAIs and improve overall patient care quality in labor and delivery settings.

1.0       Introduction

Infection control practices within healthcare settings are crucial for ensuring patient safety and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. The labor ward, being a sensitive area where women give birth, requires stringent infection control measures to safeguard both maternal and neonatal health. Asaba Specialist Hospital, like many healthcare facilities, faces challenges in maintaining optimal infection control practices within its labor ward. This research aims to investigate the infection control practices in Asaba Specialist Hospital’s labor ward and their effects on patient outcomes.

1.1       Background to the Study

Infection control in healthcare settings is a multifaceted approach involving policies, procedures, and practices aimed at preventing the transmission of infectious agents (Ghabrah et al., 2021). Within the healthcare environment, labour wards stand out as areas demanding stringent infection control measures due to the vulnerable populations they serve, including pregnant women and newborns (Luo et al., 2020). The effectiveness of infection control practices in these settings is paramount as inadequate measures can result in healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), which contribute to increased morbidity, mortality, prolonged hospital stays, and added healthcare costs (Sadoh et al., 2022).

The prevention of HAIs in labor wards requires the implementation of comprehensive infection control protocols (Ofili et al., 2021). These protocols encompass various aspects such as hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, proper waste disposal, and adherence to standard precautions (Sethi et al., 2022). Hand hygiene, in particular, plays a crucial role in reducing the transmission of pathogens within healthcare settings (World Health Organization, 2022). By promoting frequent handwashing with soap and water or the use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers, healthcare workers can minimise the risk of spreading infections to vulnerable patients (Kermode et al., 2021).

In addition to hand hygiene, environmental cleaning is another essential component of infection control in labour wards (Stein et al., 2021). Proper disinfection of surfaces and equipment helps eliminate pathogens that could pose a risk to patients and healthcare workers (Ibeziako & Ibekwe, 2022). Regular cleaning and disinfection of labor ward facilities, including delivery rooms and equipment such as birthing beds and incubators, are crucial for maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for childbirth (Bamigboye & Adesanya, 2022).

Furthermore, adherence to standard precautions is fundamental in preventing the transmission of infections in labor wards (Adinma et al., 2021). 1.2       Statement of Problem

Identifying gaps and challenges in infection control practices within labor wards is essential for understanding the continued occurrence of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and their impact on patient outcomes. Despite the implementation of infection control protocols, inconsistencies persist in adherence among healthcare workers, leading to increased morbidity, mortality, prolonged hospital stays, and added healthcare costs (Sadoh et al., 2022). One significant gap lies in the inconsistent compliance with hand hygiene practices among healthcare workers, highlighting the need for improved adherence to hand hygiene protocols (Kermode et al., 2021). Additionally, there is a lack of standardized environmental cleaning protocols, contributing to suboptimal disinfection practices and the persistence of pathogens in patient care areas (Ibeziako & Ibekwe, 2022).
