THE INFLUENCE OF E-COMMERCE PLATFORMS ON MARKETING AND INCOME GENERATION FOR NIGERIAN AGRICULTURAL COOPERATIVES
Abstract

The methodological framework combined descriptive statistics with advanced analytical techniques: logistic regression identified key determinants of e-commerce adoption, while structural equation modeling (SEM) elucidated causal pathways linking platform usage to enhanced marketing performance and income outcomes. Empirical results demonstrated that e-commerce integration expanded market reach by 35% and elevated net incomes by an average of 25%, primarily through reduced reliance on traditional intermediaries. Despite these benefits, structural barriers persisted, notably low digital literacy rates and uneven rural internet infrastructure, which curtailed optimal adoption. Policy implications emphasize coordinated interventions, such as federally subsidized digital skills training, targeted broadband subsidies for agrarian communities, and public-private collaborations to adapt e-commerce interfaces for cooperative-based agriculture. The study concludes that, with appropriate institutional support, e-commerce platforms can serve as catalytic mechanisms for sustainable agricultural commercialization and poverty reduction among Nigerian smallholders.

INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Nigeria’s agricultural sector continues to play a vital role in the national economy, accounting for roughly a quarter of GDP and employing more than 60% of the labor force, primarily through smallholder farming and cooperative systems (Nwafor & Umebali, 2024). Agricultural cooperatives serve as critical mechanisms for resource aggregation, enabling collective production, marketing, and negotiation, thereby improving farmer livelihoods especially in rural areas where individuals contend with market isolation and price instability. In regions such as Anambra and Benue, cooperatives predominantly focus on staple crops like rice, cassava, and vegetables, though conventional marketing methods often lead to significant post-harvest losses and weak bargaining power (Nwafor & Umebali, 2024). The introduction of e-commerce platforms has revolutionized these dynamics by connecting cooperatives directly with urban consumers, exporters, and processors, resulting in more efficient supply chains and greater economic sustainability.
The integration of digital marketplaces, mobile applications, and social media has facilitated online transactions, product listings, and access to real-time market data in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. Platforms including Jumia Food, Farmcrowdy, and ThriveAgric have become instrumental in inventory management, price discovery, and logistics coordination (Morepje et al., 2024). 1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the substantial potential of digital commerce platforms, Nigerian agricultural cooperatives continue to face systemic challenges in marketing and income optimization, largely due to insufficient technological integration (Akwaekwe et al., 2025). The persistent dependence on physical market structures and intermediary networks exacerbates inefficiencies, including inflated transportation expenditures and dinar exploitation, collectively reducing smallholder earnings by an estimated 20–30% (Nwafor & Umebali, 2024). Even in digitally progressive regions such as Anambra, structural constraints particularly low digital literacy and erratic internet availability restrict the efficacy of social commerce initiatives, thereby obstructing cooperative efforts to refine marketing strategies and attain scalable efficiencies (Morepje et al., 2024).
Compounding these difficulties, infrastructural deficiencies and skill disparities hinder broader e-commerce assimilation, reinforcing market fragmentation and income instability among smallholders (Adesoga et al., 2025). Empirical analyses across Sub-Saharan Africa underscore that the absence of corrective interventions deprives agricultural cooperatives of digital platforms’ capacity to foster sustainability and revenue growth (Ma et al., 2024). While AI-enabled tools present viable solutions, their deployment in Nigeria encounters operational impediments primarily connectivity disparities resulting in uneven regional adoption and benefit distribution (Akwaekwe et al., 2025). Policy inadequacies, particularly the lack of structured digital upskilling programs, further aggravate these challenges, as evidenced by research demonstrating that disjointed market linkages provide negligible welfare improvements for farmers (Nwafor & Umebali, 2024). Absent deliberate, context-specific interventions, Nigerian cooperatives risk protracted stagnation, jeopardizing national agricultural output targets and broader economic adaptive capacity (Morepje et al., 2024).
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to examine the influence of e-commerce platforms on marketing and income generation for Nigerian agricultural cooperatives. The specific objectives are:
