THE IMPACT OF E-NAIRA ON NIGERIA’S MONETARY POLICY

Abstract

This quantitative survey research design aimed to comprehensively investigate the impact of the e-Naira on Nigeria’s monetary policy. A structured questionnaire was meticulously crafted to gather insights from a sample of 120 respondents, chosen through a convenient sampling technique. Employing SPSS27, the collected data underwent rigorous presentation and analysis, providing a robust foundation for testing the hypotheses formulated in the study. Utilizing a one-sample t-test with an assumed mean of 0 and a critical table value of 2.92 at a 5% level of significance, the hypotheses were tested to discern the e-Naira’s influence on the efficiency of monetary transactions, its contribution to financial inclusion, and its implications within the monetary policy framework. The findings, rooted in statistical analyses, rejected the null hypotheses for each aspect, affirming a positive impact of the e-Naira on transactional efficiency, financial inclusion, and the broader monetary policy context. In conclusion, the study establishes that the introduction of the e-Naira has significantly enhanced the efficiency of monetary transactions and contributed positively to financial inclusion within the Nigerian context. Moreover, the adoption of the e-Naira within the monetary policy framework presents both challenges and opportunities. These findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of the e-Naira’s multifaceted role in reshaping Nigeria’s financial landscape. Recommendations stemming from the study underscore the importance of continuous monitoring, public awareness campaigns, enhanced cybersecurity measures, and strategic collaborations with financial institutions. The research, conducted in the past tense, adds valuable insights to the evolving discourse on digital currency adoption and serves as a foundation for informed decision-making by policymakers, financial institutions, and other stakeholders in the dynamic landscape of Nigeria’s monetary policy.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study

The advent of digital technologies has ushered in a transformative era for global economies, reshaping various sectors, with a profound impact on finance. Allen, Gu, and Jagtiani (2022) emphasize the financial structural transformation in China due to fintech, cryptocurrencies, and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), signaling a global trend. In response to this digital revolution, Nigeria has embarked on a daring journey to modernize its monetary system through the introduction of the e-Naira. This digital version of the national currency has the potential to revolutionize Nigeria’s monetary policy framework, providing an opportunity for enhanced efficiency and financial inclusion (Alliance for Financial Inclusion, 2022).

The introduction of the e-Naira serves as a response to challenges within Nigeria’s traditional monetary policy framework. Traditional systems faced inefficiencies in cash transactions, limited financial inclusion, and the prevalence of informal and unrecorded transactions. Armas, Ruiz, and Vásquez (2022) highlight how CBDCs, like the e-Naira, can potentially address these issues by promoting efficiency in payment systems and contributing to financial inclusion. Therefore, the e-Naira becomes a strategic tool for overcoming existing challenges in Nigeria’s monetary landscape.

The objectives of this thesis align with the broader context of enhancing Nigeria’s monetary policy. First, the study aims to assess how the e-Naira impacts the efficiency of monetary transactions in the country. The work of Auer et al. (2021) on CBDCs provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the motives and economic implications of digital currencies. Second, the research evaluates the influence of the e-Naira on the level of financial inclusion in Nigeria. Cooper, Esser, and Allen (2019) have explored the use cases of CBDCs for financial inclusion, providing insights into how digital currencies can bridge gaps in accessibility to financial services. Lastly, the study analyzes the challenges and opportunities arising from the adoption of the e-Naira within the framework of Nigeria’s monetary policy, drawing inspiration from Banet and Lebeau’s (2022) examination of the potential trade-off between financial inclusion and disintermediation associated with CBDCs.

1.2       Statement of Problem

The implementation of the e-Naira in Nigeria’s monetary landscape introduces a range of challenges that necessitate thorough investigation. One primary concern is the efficiency of monetary transactions in the digital era. The traditional monetary system faced inefficiencies in cash transactions, prompting the adoption of digital currencies as a potential solution (Armas, Ruiz, & Vásquez, 2022). However, the specific impact of the e-Naira on transactional efficiency remains a critical aspect that requires scrutiny.

Financial inclusion is another pivotal concern associated with the introduction of the e-Naira. While the digital currency has the potential to bridge gaps and improve accessibility to financial services, there is a need to assess its actual influence on the level of financial inclusion in Nigeria (Cooper, Esser, & Allen, 2019). Understanding whether the e-Naira effectively reaches the unbanked and underbanked populations is crucial for policymakers and financial institutions striving to create a more inclusive financial system.

Additionally, the e-Naira’s integration into Nigeria’s monetary policy framework presents both opportunities and challenges. The potential benefits include increased transparency and traceability in transactions, but it is essential to examine potential drawbacks such as cyber threats, disintermediation, and the impact on traditional banking systems (Banet & Lebeau, 2022). Balancing these aspects is critical for ensuring the overall stability and effectiveness of the monetary policy.

As Nigeria embraces this digital transformation, it is imperative to address these issues comprehensively to unlock the full potential of the e-Naira while mitigating potential risks. Therefore, the statement of the problem revolves around assessing the e-Naira’s impact on the efficiency of monetary transactions, its contribution to financial inclusion, and the challenges and opportunities it introduces within the broader framework of Nigeria’s monetary policy.

1.3       Objectives of the Study

This study aims to achieve three specific objectives:

  1. To assess the impact of the e-Naira on the efficiency of monetary transactions in Nigeria. 2. To evaluate the influence of the e-Naira on the level of financial inclusion in the country. 3.    To analyze the challenges and opportunities presented by the adoption of the e-Naira in the context of Nigeria’s monetary policy.

1.4       Research Questions

To address the stated objectives, the following research questions guide the study:

  1. How does the introduction of the e-Naira affect the efficiency of monetary transactions in Nigeria?
  2. What is the impact of the e-Naira on the level of financial inclusion in the country?
  3. What challenges and opportunities arise from the adoption of the e-Naira within the framework of Nigeria’s monetary policy?

1.5       Research Hypotheses

The study formulates the following hypotheses to guide the investigation:

  1. The introduction of the e-Naira has no positive impact on the efficiency of monetary transactions in Nigeria.
  2. The e-Naira contributes does not significantly to the enhancement of financial inclusion in the country. C
  3. The adoption of the e-Naira does not present both challenges and opportunities within the context of Nigeria’s monetary policy.

1.6       Significance of the Study

The significance of this research extends to a diverse array of stakeholders, encompassing policymakers, financial institutions, economists, and the general public. A thorough comprehension of the e-Naira’s impact on Nigeria’s monetary policy empowers policymakers to make informed decisions, thereby contributing to the enhancement of the overall effectiveness of the country’s financial system. This knowledge equips policymakers with the insights needed to navigate the evolving landscape of digital currencies, ensuring that regulatory frameworks remain responsive and conducive to sustainable economic development.

For financial institutions, this research serves as a valuable resource enabling them to refine and optimize their strategies in response to the ongoing digital transformation. The insights derived from understanding the implications of the e-Naira on Nigeria’s monetary policy assist these institutions in adapting their operations to align with the changing financial landscape. By strategically embracing digital advancements, financial institutions can position themselves to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the e-Naira, ensuring resilience and relevance in an increasingly digitized monetary environment.

Economists, as key observers and interpreters of economic dynamics, stand to gain profound insights from this research. A nuanced understanding of how the e-Naira influences Nigeria’s monetary policy provides economists with a basis for evaluating the broader implications of digital currencies on economic structures and behaviors. Such insights contribute to the ongoing discourse surrounding the role of digital currencies in shaping economic dynamics, facilitating more informed analyses and predictions of future economic trends.

In essence, the research not only serves the immediate needs of policymakers and financial institutions but also contributes to the collective understanding of the transformative potential of digital currencies in the broader economic landscape. As Nigeria pioneers the integration of the e-Naira into its monetary framework, the outcomes of this research hold the promise of fostering a more informed, adaptive, and resilient financial ecosystem that benefits society at large.
