IMPACT OF NIGHTS SHIFT ON NURSING CARE PERFORMANCE AND PATIENTS’ HEALTH OUTCOME IN EDO SPECIALIST HOSPITAL, BENIN CITY, EDO STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract
This study investigated the impact of night shift work on nursing care performance and patient outcomes at Edo Specialist Hospital. A quantitative survey research design was adopted to explore the various dimensions of this issue. A structured questionnaire was meticulously designed and administered to a sample of 120 respondents, all of whom were nurses working at the hospital. To analyze the collected data, frequency tables, simple percentages, means, and standard deviations were utilized to summarize the responses and identify trends. Additionally, t-tests were employed to test the hypotheses related to the effects of night shift work on nursing performance and patient outcomes. The findings revealed that night shift work significantly decreased the overall performance of nurses at Edo Specialist Hospital. Specifically, the majority of respondents agreed that night shifts negatively impacted their job performance, with a substantial proportion strongly disagreeing with the notion that night shift work had no adverse effects. This result underscores the considerable challenges faced by nurses working non-standard hours, including fatigue and diminished job satisfaction. The study also found that patient care quality was negatively affected by the presence of night shift nurses, aligning with previous research suggesting that reduced nurse performance during night shifts can lead to poorer patient outcomes. Moreover, the analysis indicated that patient health outcomes deteriorated as more nurses were scheduled for night shifts. This correlation suggests that not only does night shift work impact nurse performance, but it also has a cascading effect on patient health. The study’s results highlighted the importance of implementing strategies to mitigate these negative effects. Recommendations included regular rotation of night shifts among nurses, which could potentially improve their performance and patient outcomes. Providing additional support and resources for night shift nurses was also recommended to help reduce the adverse impact on their work and patient care. In conclusion, the study emphasized the need for healthcare institutions to address the challenges associated with night shift work. The implementation of effective organizational strategies and support systems is crucial to enhancing nurse performance and patient outcomes. The findings underscore the importance of adopting best practices to manage night shift schedules and provide adequate support to nurses, ultimately improving overall healthcare delivery. However, the impact of these night shifts on nurses’ health and job performance, and consequently on patient outcomes, warrants careful examination.
Working night shifts is a common requirement in hospitals and other healthcare settings, designed to ensure that patients receive care at all hours. Despite their necessity, night shifts can present significant challenges for nurses. The timing of the sleep opportunity and work period are vital in determining the quantity and quality of sleep and performance at work. (Chinoy & Duffy 2016). The importance of aligning sleep schedules with the body’s natural circadian rhythms to optimize sleep efficiency and overall well-being. Discrepancies between sleep timing and work demands can disrupt the sleep-wake cycle, leading to insufficient or poor-quality sleep. This misalignment can adversely affect cognitive functions, mood, and productivity, thereby impacting job performance. Thus, maintaining a coherent and well-synchronized sleep and work schedule is essential for maximizing both sleep quality and occupational effectiveness. Research has shown that night shift work can lead to physical and psychological issues, such as sleep disturbances and fatigue, which subsequently affect nurses’ performance and overall job satisfaction. 1.2 Statement of Problem

The study focused on Edo Specialist Hospital in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. It examined the effects of night shift work on nursing performance and patient health outcomes within this hospital. Data were collected from nursing staff working night shifts and patients receiving care during these shifts. The study covered a period from January to June 2024, encompassing various departments within the hospital to ensure comprehensive coverage of the night shift impact.
