CHAPTER ONE

1.0       INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background of the study

There has never been a successful corporation without a leader (Armstrong, 2020). To be a leader, one does not have to be the senior officer or commander. Organizations must have a leader in order to perform at some level of efficiency and effectiveness (Müller and Turner, 2017). Organizations that are successful have a strong focus on leadership. Whatever the value, it’s a hard concept to grasp, although there are developing areas of wide agreement (Müller and Turner, 2017).

First and foremost, leadership is an act of persuasion based more on moral character than formal power. In many cases, it is not the sole domain of leaders who hold positions of power, and perhaps not even a majority of them (Shamim et al., 2016). The type and quality of relationships between individuals, rather than particular positions, characterize this action. The duty to give an opportunity for leadership participation is on each and every one of a group’s members. Seeing leadership in this manner does not negate the existence of power and authority, but it requires a different approach to organizational and community life (Wakabi, 2016). The leadership method is founded on a caring ethic, educated understanding, and personal connections that are mutually impactful. Even though they are opposites, authority and influence may work together in harmony.

To be an effective manager, you need to be able to inspire your team and instill excellent work habits in them (Armstrong, 2020). Managers must also be able to relate well to others in order to earn the respect of their workforce. In order for people to have a positive attitude toward their job and the company, managers must have the power and drive to inspire confidence. Having a strong work ethic is essential if you want to see progress in your career. In order for a company to fulfill its goals, the leaders and managers must show that they have the authority and excellent governance necessary to maintain control over their employees. They must also possess strong leadership abilities (Michael, 2019). Vision, strategy, and outcomes are all intertwined in effective leadership. Managers and executives, as well as their direct reports, must be familiar with the company’s mission and vision (Shamim et al., 2016). To be a leader, you must be able to lead, conduct, escort, guide, trace, steer, have a clear vision, and manage people (Michael, 2019).

Often, we think of an HR manager or leader as someone who is supposed to display the correct behavior toward their workers or subordinates. It’s a well-known fact that work schedules in Nigerian firms are task-focused and monotonous, with minimal room for variation, and yet regulations and choices are pushed on employees (Wakabi, 2016). As a result, individuals in companies where the leadership sees them as simply tools for the task at hand will pretend to perform well in order to meet the criteria and metrics they are given.

Human resource managers must motivate their subordinates, coworkers, and customers or clients in order to get the job done. As a result, for an organization’s leadership to be successful and efficient, the human aspect must be examined seriously in addition to the output of its employees. A set of leadership standards are intended to be lived by Human resource managers and leaders in selected Lagos state enterprises in order to improve performance. The goal of this research was to identify the leadership style, behavioral traits, and human resource management skills of effective HR managers. It’s for this reason that, in light of this, the research will investigate how leadership styles are connected to behavioral and human resource management competencies in the chosen firms.

Some experts feel that over-managed and under-led organizations impede the development and transformation of a company. This study is essential because of this (Michael, 2019). It’s also critical that the actions of the company’s top executives have a greater effect on their workers in several ways. Although employee values, attitudes, and leadership styles all have a part in improving performance, each of these factors may be tweaked to have a significant influence.

There are a wide variety of leadership styles to pick from while doing research on leadership style behaviors, thus it is important to study and investigate all of them.

1.2       Objectives of the study

The main objective of this study is to investigate the leadership style behavioural and human resource managerial competency of successful human resource manager.

Specifically, the study sought:

  1. To identify the various leadership behavioural styles exhibited by Human resource managers in enhancing organizational performance.
  2. To examine the impact of effective leadership style on the success of human resource managers.
  3. The impact of managerial competency on the success of human resource managers.
  4. To make recommendations that might lead to improvement of organizational performance.
