INTRODUCTION

Abstract

Quantitative data underwent detailed analysis using descriptive statistics to summarize training quality and employability indicators such as practical skills mastery and job placement rates, followed by multiple regression modeling to evaluate causal relationships, particularly the influence of curriculum relevance, equipment availability, and instructor competence on outcomes like self-employment initiation and wage employment securing. Qualitative responses were subjected to rigorous thematic analysis, identifying recurring patterns in perceived barriers and success factors. Key findings indicate that technical colleges significantly improved practical skills acquisition in 65–75% of graduates, particularly in trades like electrical installation, welding, and automobile mechanics, fostering competencies valued by local industries. However, persistent challenges severely constrained overall employability: outdated equipment affected 80% of programs, limiting hands-on training, while limited industry linkages and internship opportunities hindered real-world exposure. As a result, only 45% of graduates secured direct trade-related employment within six months of completion, with many resorting to informal self-employment or unrelated jobs. Disparities were stark: urban colleges in Awka and Onitsha achieved 55% placement rates due to better facilities and proximity to industrial hubs like Nnewi, compared to 35% in rural institutions plagued by resource scarcity. In conclusion, while technical colleges in Anambra demonstrate moderate effectiveness in building foundational vocational skills, systemic barriers such as outdated infrastructure, weak curriculum-industry alignment, and urban-rural inequities substantially undermine youth employability, perpetuating skills mismatches in a state with vibrant entrepreneurial potential. Addressing these gaps is essential for realizing vocational education’s role in reducing unemployment and driving economic growth. The study proposes several recommendations to enhance outcomes. Regular curriculum updates through NABTEB-industry consultations could incorporate emerging technologies like renewable energy and digital fabrication. Public-private partnerships with firms in Onitsha and Nnewi would facilitate equipment donations, internships, and guest instruction. Establishing annual tracer studies would track graduate outcomes and inform adjustments. Targeted investments in rural colleges for modern workshops and transport subsidies would reduce disparities. Mandatory soft skills modules in entrepreneurship and communication would enhance self-employment viability. Implementing these measures could boost direct employability by 40–50%, transforming technical colleges into engines of sustainable youth empowerment in Anambra State.

1.1 Background of the Study

Vocational education, which focuses on imparting practical, hands-on skills tailored to specific trades and occupations, has long been recognized as a critical and strategic pathway to enhancing youth employability. This is particularly relevant in economies facing persistently high unemployment rates and pronounced mismatches between educational outputs and labor market demands. Unlike traditional academic streams that emphasize theoretical knowledge, vocational training prioritizes competency-based learning, equipping individuals with job-specific skills that enable efficient performance upon completion. Globally, robust Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) systems have demonstrated their effectiveness in reducing youth unemployment by deliberately aligning curricula with industry requirements, thereby facilitating smooth transitions from school to work. For instance, Germany and Switzerland achieve youth employment rates exceeding 70% through dual apprenticeship models that integrate classroom instruction with structured workplace experience, producing highly skilled workers who precisely meet employer needs (UNESCO-UNEVOC, 2022; World Bank, 2021).

This approach is especially pertinent in rapidly urbanizing nations where traditional agricultural livelihoods decline and new industries require specialized labor.

Nigeria exemplifies this challenge, with youth unemployment exceeding 40% and millions of graduates from general academic programs lacking the applied skills sought by employers in key growth sectors such as automobile repair, electrical works, welding, fabrication, and information technology (National Bureau of Statistics, 2024). 1.2 Statement of the Problem

Technical colleges in Anambra State persistently struggle to produce graduates with the employability required by the state’s evolving economy, despite their intended focus on practical, trade-specific training. A fundamental issue stems from curricula that remain outdated, failing to integrate contemporary technologies such as manufacturing automation, renewable energy systems, or advanced digital tools in ICT-related fields (Uzoagulu, 2022; Eze et al., 2022). Many institutions have retained the same curricular frameworks for over a decade, prioritizing theoretical knowledge at the expense of hands-on application, resulting in graduates who may understand theoretical principles but falter when faced with real-world problem-solving in trades like automobile mechanics, welding, or electrical installation.

This problem is compounded by aging infrastructure and equipment. Most college workshops rely on machinery dating back to the 1980s or 1990s, lacking modern diagnostic tools, CNC machines, or essential software simulations (Ogunode et al., 2021). Consequently, students receive insufficient practical training, often limited to demonstrations on malfunctioning or obsolete equipment, which leaves them ill-prepared for workplace demands. Only 40 to 50% of graduates secure employment relevant to their trade within a year, with many resorting to informal, low-paying self-employment or further apprenticeship to compensate for skill deficiencies (Uzoagulu, 2022).

Another critical weakness is the absence of strong industry collaboration. 1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective is to examine the effectiveness of technical colleges in promoting youth employability through vocational education in Anambra State.

For technical college administrators and principals, the findings highlight urgent upgrade needs in facilities, instructor capacity, and pedagogical approaches, providing a diagnostic framework to prioritize resource requests, forge local industry collaborations, and implement internal quality assurance mechanisms. This empowers institutions to shift from theoretical dominance to competency-based training, enhancing institutional reputation, student retention, and graduate success stories that attract future enrollment.

For students and parents, many from entrepreneurial families valuing practical livelihoods, the study underscores the intrinsic value of technical college training as a viable, dignified pathway to self-employment and wage jobs in high-demand trades, countering societal biases favoring university degrees. By demonstrating tangible skill gains and employment linkages when programs are effective, it encourages informed choices, greater parental support for vocational paths, and reduced dropout from perceived irrelevance.

Nationally, the evidence informs Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) policies under the Federal Ministry of Education, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and ongoing TVET reforms, offering southeastern Nigeria-specific data to refine the National Vocational Qualification Framework and promote scalable models of industry-integrated training. This contributes to addressing Nigeria’s youth unemployment crisis and aligning education with Vision 2050 economic goals.

Academically, the research enriches the literature on vocational education and employability in Nigeria by providing detailed, context-specific insights from a southeastern commercial hub, filling gaps in regional studies on technical college outcomes. It contributes to theoretical frameworks like human capital and competency-based education theories through empirical validation in a developing economy, serving as a reference for comparative analyses across states and informing policy-oriented scholarship on TVET’s role in sustainable development. Ultimately, by bridging practice, policy, and theory, this study advances efforts to revitalize vocational education as a cornerstone of youth empowerment and economic resilience in Nigeria.

1.6 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The scope of this study is deliberately delineated to public technical colleges in Anambra State, covering the period from 2020 to 2025—a timeframe that captures post-COVID recovery efforts, recent state TVET policy implementations (2021), and contemporary labor market dynamics influenced by digital and green transitions. Geographically, it encompasses colleges across urban centers (Awka, Onitsha, Nnewi) and rural local government areas (Ihiala, Aguata, Orumba North/South), ensuring representation of diverse infrastructural and industrial proximity contexts. The research focuses on NABTEB-certified programs in core trades (electrical, mechanical, building, ICT), examining curriculum content, training delivery, equipment quality, industry linkages, and graduate outcomes (skills mastery, employment placement, self-employment initiation).
