Abstract

The study focuses on the methods of teaching Yoruba Language in selected Nigeria polytechnics. It examines the background, methods of teaching, tools and equipments use in teaching Yoruba Language. The primary data for the study were generated from well structured question broadcasted to random samples of 70 out of 200 NDII students from federal polytechnic Nekede and Abia State Polytechnic and supported with interviews. Frequency labels, simple proportion percentage ratios, average, ranking, and chi-square (test for goodness of fit) for validation of the some of the some of the findings as distributed. From the data presented and analyzed textbook is the mostly used tool for teaching Yoruba Language.Followed by the instructional materials but 20% students said that textbooks, chalkboard and instructional materials are the tools used. It was also established from the study that lecture method, lecture with discussion practical assignment, and class discussions are the methods of teaching Yoruba Language. Therefore the researcher summarized and recommend that the NBTE (National Biand for Technical Education) should improve on the teaching tools by providing enough instructional materialss for teaching and learning and the methods of teaching Yoruba Language should be maintained and if possible across other departments.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

In the report of Adunola (2011), method can be regarded as approach to institution. It is a means through which the teacher decides to impact knowledge on the students Dele (1982), defined method of teaching as ways, techniques and ideas of imparting knowledge to student at any level. Abdulhamid, (2009) is of the view that methods of teaching are the baseline of actions, instruments adopted by the teacher to ensure the delivery effective teaching and learning process. Methods of teaching structurally determines how the teacher would handle the process of lesson during teaching, what he should do, where and when he should perform a particular task.

 

Teaching, according to Oladipo and Ayeni (2000), involves bringing about or at least enable desirable changes in learners However, effective teaching requires the teacher to step out of the field of personal experience and step into the world of the learners. Brown (1997) it is the learners who need to be more commitment to learn. A teaching method comprises the principles and methods used for instructing the learners. Teaching methods can be described as the way of achieving learning outcome the selection of teaching methods is dependent on the learners and the characteristics of the learning situation the chosen teaching method or methods should best support the attainment of best learning outcomes through instructions given by the teachers, Abdullahi (2004). Institutional materials have a greater role to play in day to day running activities of schools especially primary school setting. The use of instructional materials is very essential for the pupils not forget the topic of the lesson they will surely remember the practical things that the guide of instructional materials. Researchers have shown that many of our schools today especially primary schools little or no instructional materials. These facilities will make the lesson to be simple and easy for the pupils to comprehend. For instance, a school that takes music as part of the subjects should have instructional materials like tambourine, beat, key-board, e.t.c.

1.2 AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY

The aims and objectives of the study are to assess the methods of teaching Yoruba Language in selected Nigeria polytechnics.

  1. It investigated whether textbooks and chalkboard the only teaching and learning tools in teaching Yoruba Language.
  2. It investigated whether multimedia instructional aids are used for both teaching and learning in Languages courses.
  3. It investigated whether E-learning is used in teaching introduction to instructional materialss.
  4. To investigate the most common teaching methods for Yoruba Language to Languages majors.

1.3 STATEMENT OF PROBLEMS

The objective of teaching Yoruba Language in Nigeria Polytechnics include to equip students with the necessary knowledge that will aid them to identify those problems that can be solved by means of Yoruba language, and to design and implement effectively. Another objective of the study is to provide the intellectual foundation for future professional development. A cornerstone in this study is ability fro student to reason logical. It is essential that student should be familiar with basic concepts in many Yoruba Language.

Although, there are some other problems such as:

  • Lack of lecturers to teach Yoruba Language.

  • Lack of teaching tools

  • Lack of application of instructional materials to real world situation in their programme of study.

  • Extreme abnormal dislike or fear and dread of mathematics (one of the credit required for one to study Languages).

1.4 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The purpose of the study is to the methods of teaching Yoruba Language. Also to educate student to succeed in his/her professional career, which takes place in the context of rapidly changing technology. In order to succeed in this area, the student must have certain knowledge, skills and attitudes.
