PREVALENCE AND ASSOCIATED FACTORS OF PRE-ECLAMPSIA AMONG PREGNANT WOMEN ATTENDING ANTI-NATAL CARE AT ABBI HEALTH CARE CENTRE. (2019 TILL DATE)

Abstract

The study focused on investigating the prevalence and associated factors of pre-eclampsia among pregnant women attending antenatal care at Abbi Health Care Centre. Adopting a quantitative survey research design, data were collected using a structured questionnaire from a sample of 120 respondents. Hypotheses were formulated and tested using the t-test method. The findings revealed significant associations between maternal age and the prevalence of pre-eclampsia, indicating that older pregnant women were more susceptible to the condition. Additionally, women with a history of hypertension were found to have a higher likelihood of developing pre-eclampsia during pregnancy. Adequate prenatal care was also shown to reduce the risk of severe complications associated with pre-eclampsia, highlighting the importance of comprehensive antenatal monitoring and management strategies. In conclusion, the study contributes valuable insights into the understanding of pre-eclampsia and its implications for maternal and perinatal health at Abbi Health Care Centre. The findings underscore the importance of targeted interventions, including improved access to prenatal screening, specialized care for high-risk women, and promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviors among pregnant women. Recommendations are made for enhancing antenatal education, strengthening maternal health monitoring systems, and fostering collaborative care models among healthcare providers. Despite limitations such as the reliance on self-reported data and the cross-sectional design, the study provides a foundation for future research initiatives aimed at addressing the complexities of pre-eclampsia and improving maternal outcomes in antenatal care settings.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study

Pre-eclampsia, a hypertensive disorder specific to pregnancy, remains a significant health concern globally, contributing to maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality (Wagnew et al., 2022). This condition is characterized by high blood pressure and signs of damage to other organ systems, most commonly the liver and kidneys (Saxena et al., 2022). Despite advancements in prenatal care, pre-eclampsia continues to pose challenges to maternal and fetal health, particularly in resource-limited settings (Osungbade & Ige, 2021). Its prevalence varies across different populations and settings, with factors such as maternal age, history of hypertension, and access to healthcare influencing its occurrence (Minire et al., 2023).

Understanding the prevalence and associated factors of pre-eclampsia is crucial for effective management and prevention strategies. Abbi Health Care Centre, serving a diverse population, provides a unique context to investigate this condition among pregnant women (Duley, 2021). Research conducted at Abbi Health Care Centre can contribute valuable insights into the epidemiology of pre-eclampsia within this specific setting (Tessema et al., 2021). By identifying the factors associated with pre-eclampsia, healthcare providers can implement targeted interventions to mitigate its impact on maternal and perinatal outcomes (Ajah, 2022). This can include early detection, monitoring, and timely management of hypertensive disorders during pregnancy (Gaym et al., 2021).

Disparities in access to healthcare further complicate the management and outcomes of pre-eclampsia (Schneider et al., 2021). In many low- and middle-income countries, limited resources and inadequate healthcare infrastructure hinder the provision of timely and appropriate prenatal care (Ota et al., 2022). As a result, pregnant women in these settings may face greater risks of developing complications such as pre-eclampsia (Vata et al., 2021). Efforts to strengthen health systems and improve access to prenatal care are essential for reducing the burden of pre-eclampsia and improving maternal and perinatal outcomes (Say et al., 2022).

The prevalence of pre-eclampsia varies not only between different populations but also within diverse geographic regions (Belay & Wudad, 2019). Factors such as socio-economic status, maternal nutrition, and environmental factors may contribute to these variations (Hutcheon et al., 2021). Research conducted in specific settings, such as Abbi Health Care Centre, can provide valuable data on the local epidemiology of pre-eclampsia (Abalos et al., 2022). By understanding the unique factors influencing the occurrence of pre-eclampsia within a particular population, healthcare providers can tailor interventions to address the specific needs and challenges faced by pregnant women in that community (Schneider et al., 2021).

In essence, pre-eclampsia remains a significant health concern globally, contributing to maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Its prevalence varies across different populations and settings, with disparities in access to healthcare further complicating its management and outcomes. Abbi Health Care Centre, serving a diverse population, provides a unique context to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of pre-eclampsia among pregnant women. By understanding the epidemiology of pre-eclampsia and its determinants, healthcare providers can implement targeted interventions to improve maternal and perinatal outcomes. Efforts to strengthen health systems and improve access to prenatal care are essential for reducing the burden of pre-eclampsia and ensuring the well-being of pregnant women and their infants.

1.2       Statement of Problem

Despite the significant strides made in understanding pre-eclampsia, there remain critical gaps in the literature that warrant further investigation. One such gap pertains to the lack of comprehensive studies focusing on the prevalence and associated factors of pre-eclampsia within specific healthcare settings, such as Abbi Health Care Centre (Tesfaye et al., 2021). While existing research provides valuable insights into the epidemiology of pre-eclampsia at a broader level, there is a need for more localized studies to capture the nuances of this condition within diverse populations (Belay & Wudad, 2019).

Furthermore, there is limited research exploring the impact of socio-economic factors on the occurrence and management of pre-eclampsia among pregnant women attending Abbi Health Care Centre (Gaym et al., 2021). Socio-economic status can significantly influence access to prenatal care, nutritional status, and overall health outcomes, yet its role in shaping the burden of pre-eclampsia remains understudied in this context (Osungbade & Ige, 2021).

Another critical gap in the literature is the insufficient attention paid to the role of environmental factors in predisposing pregnant women to pre-eclampsia within the catchment area of Abbi Health Care Centre (Ajah, 2022). Environmental factors such as pollution, climate variability, and access to clean water may impact maternal health outcomes, yet their specific influence on the incidence of pre-eclampsia remains poorly understood (Duley, 2021).

Additionally, while previous research has identified certain risk factors associated with pre-eclampsia, there is a need for more comprehensive studies to elucidate the complex interplay between genetic, environmental, and socio-economic determinants of this condition (Schneider et al., 2021). By filling these gaps in knowledge, we can gain a more holistic understanding of the factors contributing to pre-eclampsia and develop targeted interventions to mitigate its impact on maternal and perinatal health outcomes (Wagnew et al., 2022).

1.3       Objectives of the Study

  1. To determine the prevalence of pre-eclampsia among pregnant women attending antenatal care at Abbi Health Care Centre from 2019 till date.
  2. To identify the factors associated with pre-eclampsia among pregnant women in the study population during the specified period.
  3. To assess the impact of pre-eclampsia on maternal and perinatal outcomes within the study setting.

1.4       Research Questions

  1. What is the prevalence of pre-eclampsia among pregnant women attending antenatal care at Abbi Health Care Centre from 2019 till date?
  2. What are the factors associated with pre-eclampsia among pregnant women in the study population during the specified period?
  3. How does pre-eclampsia impact maternal and perinatal outcomes within the study setting?

1.5       Research Hypotheses

  1. There is no significant association between maternal age and the prevalence of pre-eclampsia.
  2. Women with a history of hypertension are not more likely to develop pre-eclampsia during pregnancy.
  3. Adequate prenatal care does not reduce the risk of severe complications associated with pre-eclampsia.

1.6       Significance of the Study

This study’s findings will make a significant contribution to the existing body of knowledge surrounding pre-eclampsia, especially within the specific context of Abbi Health Care Centre. By investigating the prevalence and associated factors of pre-eclampsia among pregnant women attending this healthcare facility, the research will provide valuable insights into the epidemiology of this condition in the local population.

Healthcare providers will benefit from the study’s findings by gaining a better understanding of the burden of pre-eclampsia among their patients. By identifying the prevalence of pre-eclampsia and its associated risk factors within the Abbi Health Care Centre’s catchment area, providers can enhance their ability to recognize and manage this condition in pregnant women under their care. This improved awareness and understanding can lead to earlier detection and intervention, ultimately improving maternal and perinatal health outcomes.

Moreover, policymakers will be informed by the study’s findings about the scope and impact of pre-eclampsia within the local healthcare system. By understanding the prevalence of pre-eclampsia and its associated complications, policymakers can allocate resources more effectively to support preventive measures, screening programs, and treatment interventions. This targeted allocation of resources can help address gaps in healthcare delivery and improve access to prenatal care services for pregnant women at risk of pre-eclampsia.

Additionally, stakeholders, including healthcare organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community groups, will benefit from the study’s findings. By understanding the burden of pre-eclampsia and its impact on maternal and perinatal health outcomes, stakeholders can collaborate to develop and implement tailored interventions aimed at mitigating the effects of this condition. These interventions may include educational campaigns to raise awareness about pre-eclampsia among pregnant women and their families, as well as initiatives to improve access to prenatal care services and support systems for women diagnosed with pre-eclampsia.

Overall, this study’s findings have the potential to inform policy and practice at multiple levels of the healthcare system, from individual patient care to broader public health initiatives. By enhancing our understanding of pre-eclampsia within the context of Abbi Health Care Centre, the research will contribute valuable evidence to guide efforts aimed at reducing maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality associated with this condition.
