Modernization, fueled by rapid urbanization, globalization, and the proliferation of industrial materials, has precipitated the decline of these traditional practices. Since the mid-20th century, concrete, steel, glass, and synthetic materials have dominated construction due to their perceived durability, rapid assembly, and suitability for high-rise and standardized structures. While enabling swift urban expansion, these materials often result in elevated embodied energy, heightened carbon emissions, inadequate thermal performance in tropical climates, and diminished cultural distinctiveness (Al-Zubaidi, 2025; Singh, 2025). In developing nations such as Nigeria, this shift has precipitated the erosion of vernacular skills, the collapse of local material economies, and the gradual extinction of traditional craftsmanship (Adetunji et al., 2025).
In Nigeria, the indigenous mud architecture historically practiced by the Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa peoples is increasingly supplanted by concrete-block constructions, even in rural and peri-urban areas. This transition is particularly pronounced in rapidly expanding cities like Lagos, where economic imperatives and land speculation prioritize expedient, profit-centric development over heritage-conscious sustainability (Adetunji et al., 2025). Parallel trends are observable worldwide: in the Middle East, traditional wind towers and courtyard houses yield to energy-intensive high-rises despite extreme heat conditions, while in Oceania, indigenous climate-responsive designs are displaced by imported prefabricated solutions (Chiran, 2025; Sibley-Behloul & El-Masry, 2025).
Despite these challenges, the past decade has seen a resurgence of interest in indigenous knowledge as a viable pathway toward sustainable architecture. Pressing imperatives climate mitigation, resource conservation, and cultural preservation have spurred architects, researchers, and policymakers to reevaluate traditional methods. Recent case studies illustrate how revitalizing indigenous techniques, such as mud construction on Lagos Island, can concurrently address environmental degradation, cultural disintegration, and economic inequities (Adetunji et al., 2025). Similarly, integrating indigenous design principles into modern urban public spaces fosters cultural continuity while meeting contemporary functional and social needs (Kumar & Sharma, 2025).
This thesis examines the preservation of indigenous building techniques amidst modernization pressures, investigating how these historically validated methods can be adapted, systematically documented, and reintegrated into contemporary architectural practice. By engaging with recent frameworks that negotiate the conflict between heritage conservation and urban development (Moussa & El-Masry, 2025), the study aims to advance discourse on resilient, culturally rooted architecture one that respects historical wisdom while addressing 21st-century exigencies (McGill Energy Journal, 2025; García-Esparza & Altaba, 2025). Ultimately, safeguarding indigenous techniques transcends nostalgic preservation; it constitutes a strategic necessity for cultivating sustainable, inclusive, and culturally vibrant built environments.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The advent of modernization has accelerated the decline of indigenous building techniques, leading to cultural homogenization and the loss of vernacular architecture’s inherent sustainability (Singh, 2025). In regions like Nigeria and the Middle East, traditional methods are being supplanted by imported materials and designs that prioritize speed and cost over environmental adaptability and cultural significance (Adetunji et al., 2025; Chiran, 2025). This shift not only erodes community identity but also exacerbates issues such as increased carbon footprints and vulnerability to climate change, as modern constructions often ignore local knowledge on resilient building (García-Esparza & Altaba, 2025; MDPI, 2025).
Despite efforts to revitalize historic structures, paradoxes arise in balancing preservation with urban social demands, resulting in underutilized heritage sites and inefficient resource allocation (Moussa & El-Masry, 2025). The lack of systematic methodologies to analyze transformation processes further hinders effective interventions, leaving indigenous techniques at risk of extinction (Springer Nature, 2025). This problem is particularly acute in developing contexts, where economic pressures favor modernization without adequate integration of traditional wisdom, underscoring the need for research that proposes hybrid solutions (Al-Zubaidi, 2025).

This challenge is especially pronounced in developing economies, where financial imperatives drive modernization without sufficient incorporation of traditional knowledge, highlighting the necessity for studies advocating integrative approaches (Al-Zubaidi, 2025).
1.3 Objectives of the Study

It is delimited to architectural preservation strategies amid modernization, excluding non-building cultural heritage elements. Limitations include reliance on secondary data and potential biases in accessible case studies.
