1.1 Background of the Study
Self-medication, defined as the selection and use of medicines without consulting a healthcare professional, represents a pervasive practice worldwide, especially in resource-constrained environments where formal medical services are inaccessible or unaffordable. Globally, it affects up to 50% of the population in low- and middle-income countries, often involving over-the-counter drugs like analgesics and antibiotics for self-diagnosed minor ailments (World Health Organization, 2023). Among adolescents, rates climb to 60-80%, driven by perceived convenience and peer influences, yet it heightens dangers including drug interactions, masking serious conditions, and fostering antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which claims 1.27 million lives annually (Agbesanwa et al., 2024). In sub-Saharan Africa, where youth comprise 70% of the population under 30, self-medication exacerbates health inequities, with 70.9% prevalence in suburban Nigerian youths linked to poor regulation of patent medicine vendors (PMVs) (Agbesanwa et al., 2024).
