INTRODUCTION
Background to Study
E-Learning refers’ to the use of various kinds of electronic media and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) the retrogressive nature of learning in school as generally observed by many researchers which posed a challenge to technological advancement in learning. In other words E -learning is an inclusive technology for all forms of educational support learning and teaching and may depends on an emphasis in aspect of component or delivery method, sometime be themed “Technology” enhanced learning (TEL) Computer-Based Training (CBT) Internet-Based Training (IBT) Web-Based Training (WBT) virtual education of digital educational collaboration.
Olaniji (2006) poised that the most vibrant sector of the national economy is the information technology industry as well as educational sector. According to Churn and’ Chin (2007) at a time of rapid knowledge up-date those who want to be maintain their competition edge must be able to acquire new knowledge and skills through learning on a continuous basis in order to keep up with the rest of the society. They maintained that there are hard ways by which man obtains knowledge we can learn through conventional class participation reading or advanced network technologies. For learning to be effective, schools should orient their learning environment towards the modern pedagogy.
Adegbola (2008) opined that e-learning is a global village and Nigeria has joined the global world to transform educational system to achieve excellence by providing diverse project in education culminating in e- learning application in the teaching and learning processes. Adegbola maintained that there are three fundament criteria for e-learning.
- It is networked, which makes it capable of instant updating storage, arch rival, distribution and sharing of instruction and information
- It is delivered to the end user via – a computer using standard internet and internet technology.
- It focused on the broadest view of learning, learning that goes beyond traditional paradigms of training
General Business education according to Ndinechi 2008 develops students with information and competencies which are needed by all in managing personal business affairs and in using the services of the business I sources world. The mission of business education at the college and university level (tertiary institution) is to train the necessary manpower for industry, business and public and private business establishment. Business education program is an umbrella which shields all business course(s). It is therefore encompassing which includes account, secretarial, marketing and purchasing supply. Aliyu (2001) defined business teachers education programme as a preplanned aimed at training and developing business education teachers. The business teachers have the responsibility to help develop the student, influence youths and future student, who desire work, attitude and prepare competent professional business teachers who will do it job (Igboke 2005).
In this research work, business teacher education is described as an education programme course(s) in an individual for the training, creative, innovative, adoptive and rational student, that can be efficient in the management of human and maternal resource for the purpose of effective satisfaction in the various business enterprise. The term utilization refers to the employment of any tool or services that will facilitate performance (Obiora 2008) Utilization of e-learning in this study therefore, means the level of the applications of e-learning method and resource in tertiary institution. The emphasis basically is with how many different e-learning resource is in use by these institutions and to what extent each of the e-learning resource is used.
Statement of the problem
A qualitative business education package is such that would revolutionize the beneficiary to the intent of affecting the society as well; it has to do with qualified personnel, applicable curriculum, adequate Information and Communication Technology (ICT) availability of other office equipment facilitate and effective management of ICT. Izuagba (2009) saw different problems disrupt the effectiveness of this (ICT) in teaching and learning in higher institution such as Business Education is being under funded, lack of equipment, workshop for skill/practice (modern technologies) inadequate skilled personnel, un-enabling environment, dilapidated building, overcrowded classrooms due to upsurge in admission, lack of teaching and learning materials, graduates of these institutions-were found to be deficient in practical and professional skill required by employers of labors and private enterprise.
The researcher got disturbed with these problems, therefore this study was conducted to provide empirical evidence on the extent of the utilization e-learning and its application in the teaching of business education course(s) teaching institutions in Anambra state.
Scope of the study
This was delimited to the colleges of education in Anambra state where business education programme is offered. The institutions are – Nwafor Orizu college of Education Nsugbe and Federal College of Education (Technical) Umunze
Purpose of the study
The main purpose of this study is to determine the extent of utilization of electronic learning in the teaching of business education courses in tertiary institution. Specifically, the study seeks to determine.
- Extent of utilization of virtual classroom in the teaching of business education courses.
- Technological competences required by business education teachers for effective application of e-learning in teaching business courses in tertiary institutions.
- Benefits of e-learning application in teaching business courses in tertiary institution.
Significance of the study
The findings of this study would be of great benefit to the Federal Government of Nigeria through the ministry of education. Hence, the knowledge geared will help to identity areas of needs for the provision of essential infrastructure, facility, staff capacity building as well as budgetary and administration planning which enhance e-learning.
Knowledge gained from the findings of this work would be of great benefit to the lecturers and students of business education, the utilization of competences of elearning facilitates in instructional delivery process.
Review of curriculum is another important benefit to higher education and accreditation bodies such as National Commission for Colleges of Education. (NCCE) National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and National University’s Commission (NUC) would gain from the findings of this study.
