ANALYSING THE ‘JAPA SYNDROME ‘ AND ITS SYSTEMIC INFLUENCE ON TRAVEL AGENCY IN NIGERIA

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study

The ‘JAPA Syndrome’ has become a pervasive phenomenon in Nigeria, driven by socio-economic factors such as high unemployment rates, inadequate infrastructure, political instability, and insecurity (Okunade & Bakare, 2020). With limited opportunities for personal and professional growth within the country, many Nigerians aspire to migrate or travel abroad in search of better prospects (Nwosu et al., 2022). This desire for greener pastures is fueled by the perceived promise of improved living standards and escape from the socio-economic challenges prevalent in their home country (Premium Times, 2022). As a result, the term ‘JAPA’ has emerged as a colloquial expression for the act of fleeing or escaping Nigeria for better opportunities elsewhere (BBC, 2022).

Nigeria’s status as Africa’s most populous nation and one of its largest economies adds complexity to the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ (Okunade, 2021b). Despite its economic potential, the country grapples with persistent socio-economic challenges that hinder development and progress (Benería et al., 2012). The allure of migrating to developed countries, where opportunities seem more abundant, exerts a significant influence on Nigerian society (Hill & Rosskam, 2009). Consequently, the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ has become deeply ingrained in the national psyche, shaping migration patterns and attitudes towards travel and mobility (Hammond, 2015).

The impact of the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ extends beyond individual aspirations, affecting various sectors of the Nigerian economy, including the travel industry (Blanden & Machin, 2020). Travel agencies, in particular, play a crucial role in facilitating migration and travel arrangements for individuals seeking to leave the country (Chowdry et al., 2021). However, the motivations driving these travel decisions often differ from conventional tourism, posing unique challenges for travel agencies in Nigeria (Di John, 2020). The phenomenon of ‘JAPA’ has reshaped the demand for travel agency services, emphasizing visa assistance, flight bookings, and other arrangements tailored to migration rather than leisure (Okunade & Bakare, 2020).

Moreover, the systemic influence of the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ on the travel agency industry reflects broader socio-economic trends in Nigeria (Massey et al., 2020). As skilled professionals and young talents opt to migrate abroad, the country experiences brain drain, depriving it of valuable human capital (Merton, 2020). This exodus of talent not only impacts the domestic workforce but also affects the demand for travel services within the country (Saharareporters, 2018). Travel agencies must navigate these challenges while adapting to the evolving needs and preferences of their clientele (SchengenVisaNews, 2022).

In response to the ‘JAPA Syndrome’, travel agencies in Nigeria are compelled to innovate and diversify their services to remain competitive (Sternehäll, 2020). Strategies such as offering specialized migration assistance, cultural orientation programs, and destination-specific guidance have become increasingly important (University UK, 2017). Moreover, partnerships with international agencies and leveraging digital platforms to reach potential migrants have emerged as key tactics for survival in the evolving landscape of the travel industry (Whitty et al., 2018).

Despite its challenges, the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ also presents opportunities for the travel agency industry in Nigeria (Woodhall, 2019). By understanding the motivations and aspirations driving migration, travel agencies can tailor their services to meet the unique needs of individuals seeking to travel abroad (Awosusi et al., 2021). Additionally, fostering a supportive ecosystem that addresses the underlying socio-economic issues driving migration can contribute to sustainable growth and development in the country (Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development, 2022).

In essence, the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ represents a complex socio-economic phenomenon that significantly influences migration patterns and the travel agency industry in Nigeria (Okunade, 2021a). Rooted in the desire for better opportunities and improved living standards, this phenomenon underscores the broader challenges facing Nigerian society (Rotberg, 2019). While presenting challenges for travel agencies, it also offers opportunities for innovation and adaptation in addressing the evolving needs of migrants (Premium Times, 2022). As Nigeria continues to grapple with socio-economic issues, understanding and addressing the underlying drivers of the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ will be crucial for shaping a more prosperous and inclusive future.

1.2       Statement of Problem

The phenomenon of the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ in Nigeria presents several significant gaps and challenges that warrant further investigation. Firstly, while there is a general understanding of the socio-economic factors driving migration aspirations among Nigerians, there remains a lack of comprehensive research examining the specific motivations and decision-making processes behind individual migration choices (Okunade & Bakare, 2020). Understanding these factors is crucial for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders in developing targeted interventions and policies aimed at addressing the root causes of the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ and promoting sustainable development within the country (Nwosu et al., 2022).

Secondly, despite the profound influence of the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ on various sectors of the Nigerian economy, including the travel agency industry, there is limited empirical research examining its systemic effects and implications (Benería et al., 2012). There is a need for in-depth studies exploring how travel agencies navigate the challenges posed by the ‘JAPA Syndrome’, including changes in consumer preferences, demand for specialized services, and the impact on business sustainability and profitability (Chowdry et al., 2021).

Furthermore, while there is anecdotal evidence suggesting a correlation between migration aspirations and broader socio-economic challenges in Nigeria, such as high unemployment rates and political instability, there is a lack of rigorous empirical research establishing causal relationships and quantifying the magnitude of these effects (Di John, 2020). Addressing this gap requires interdisciplinary approaches that integrate quantitative and qualitative methodologies to provide comprehensive insights into the dynamics of the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ and its implications for Nigerian society (Giddens, 2003).

Overall, the gaps in current research on the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ highlight the need for more robust empirical studies that delve into the underlying drivers, systemic influences, and socio-economic implications of migration aspirations in Nigeria (Massey et al., 2020). By filling these gaps, researchers can contribute valuable insights to inform evidence-based policymaking, strategic planning, and interventions aimed at addressing the challenges posed by the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ and promoting sustainable development and well-being in Nigeria and beyond.

Secondly, the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ exacerbates brain drain, as skilled professionals and young talents often opt to leave the country in search of better opportunities abroad. This brain drain not only deprives Nigeria of valuable human capital but also affects the demand for travel services, as individuals migrate permanently rather than for temporary stays or tourism purposes.

Furthermore, the prevalence of the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ highlights broader issues related to socio-economic development, governance, and policy formulation in Nigeria. Addressing this phenomenon requires a multifaceted approach that considers economic reforms, job creation initiatives, and measures to improve the overall quality of life for Nigerian citizens.

1.3       Objectives of the Study

This study aimed to achieve the following objectives:

  1. To analyze the underlying factors driving the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ among Nigerians.
  2. To assess the impact of the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ on the demand for travel agency services in Nigeria.
  3. To explore strategies and interventions that travel agencies can employ to adapt to the challenges posed by the ‘JAPA Syndrome’.

1.4       Research Questions

To guide this study, the following research questions were formulated:

  1. What are the primary motivations behind the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ among Nigerians?
  2. How does the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ influence the demand for travel agency services in Nigeria?
  3. What strategies can travel agencies adopt to mitigate the effects of the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ on their business operations?

1.5       Research Hypotheses

Based on the research questions, the following hypotheses were formulated:

  1. Socio-economic factors do not significantly contribute to the prevalence of the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ among Nigerians.
  2. The ‘JAPA Syndrome’ negatively impacts the profitability and sustainability of travel agencies in Nigeria.
  3. Implementing targeted marketing strategies and services tailored to individuals affected by the ‘JAPA Syndrome’ can not help travel agencies mitigate its adverse effects on their business.
