Abstract
This quantitative survey research aimed to explore the intricate interplay of human factors and motivations within the realm of aviation security. A structured questionnaire was meticulously designed to capture the perceptions of 120 respondents, comprising aviation professionals from diverse roles within the industry. Adopting SPSS27 as the analytical tool, the study employed a t-test to rigorously test four hypotheses, each formulated in line with specific objectives. The findings of the study highlighted the pivotal role of psychological factors in influencing aviation security personnel, as evidenced by a robust consensus among participants, with a mean score of 87.00 and a negligible standard deviation of 10.15. Similarly, passengers’ behavior and motivation were identified as significant factors, with a mean score of 87.00 and a moderate standard deviation of 12.29. Insider threats within aviation organizations were perceived positively, showcasing a mean score of 84.00 and a moderate standard deviation of 10.82. The study underscored the importance of recognizing and rewarding aviation security personnel, with strategies for improving human-centric aviation security receiving the highest mean score of 91.33 and a moderate standard deviation of 12.22. The hypotheses testing, executed through the t-test, yielded statistically significant results, rejecting the null hypotheses across all dimensions. These outcomes signify a consensus among aviation professionals on the influence of human factors and motivations in shaping perceptions within the aviation security landscape. In conclusion, this study contributes to the ongoing discourse on aviation security by emphasizing the crucial role of human-centric approaches. Recommendations include the integration of comprehensive human factors training, enhancing passenger education initiatives, and fostering a collaborative and informed security community. These findings carry practical implications for aviation industry stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers, providing valuable insights into strategies for fortifying security measures in the face of evolving threats. The study advocates for a holistic approach that recognizes the dynamic interplay between technological advancements and human factors, fostering a resilient and adaptive aviation security framework.

Aviation security is a critical aspect of global transportation, ensuring the safety of passengers, crew, and aircraft. While technological advancements have significantly improved security measures, the human factor remains a crucial element in the overall effectiveness of aviation security systems. This thesis aims to delve into the intricate relationship between the human factor and motivation in the context of aviation security.

The aviation industry has experienced remarkable growth and transformation, marked by an increased emphasis on security measures to combat evolving threats (ICAO, 2016). Technological advancements and stringent security protocols have been at the forefront of aviation security strategies, with a primary focus on enhanced screening procedures, surveillance systems, and biometric identification (ICAO: Human factors documents). However, despite these technological strides, the persistence of incidents such as breaches, unauthorized access, and insider threats underscores the need to understand and address the human element in aviation security.
The tragic events of September 11, 2001, commonly known as the 9/11 attacks, served as a wake-up call to the aviation industry regarding the multifaceted nature of security threats (Ferguson & Nelson, 2021). The aftermath of these attacks revealed that while technological measures are crucial, they must be complemented by an understanding of the human factors contributing to security lapses. This recognition has led to a shift in focus, prompting the industry to consider human errors, intentional wrongdoing, and motivational factors as significant contributors to vulnerabilities in aviation security.
Several studies, including Caldwell (2022) and Crevits, Labour, and Vanderhaegen (2018), have explored the psychological factors influencing aviation security personnel. Caldwell’s research specifically delves into the impact of crew schedules and sleep deprivation on aviation performance, highlighting the importance of addressing human factors beyond the immediate security context. Understanding the stressors, cognitive biases, and other psychological aspects affecting security personnel is crucial for optimizing their performance and decision-making.
Passenger behavior and motivation are integral components of the human element in aviation security. Studies such as those conducted by Hall (2015) and Yeh et al. The absence of comprehensive research on the human factor and motivation in aviation security hampers the development of targeted interventions to mitigate risks effectively (Demosthenous, 2017).
