PREVALENCE OF MALNUTRITION AMONG UNDER FIVE CHILDREN VISITING PEDIATRIC CLINIC IN FAITH MEDIPLEX HOSPITAL
Abstract
This study focused on investigating the prevalence of malnutrition among children under five years visiting the pediatric clinic at Faith Mediplex Hospital, as well as the associated socio-economic and demographic factors, and the effectiveness of existing nutritional interventions in reducing malnutrition prevalence. To achieve this, a quantitative survey research design was adopted, utilizing a structured questionnaire to collect data from a sample of 120 respondents. The data collected were then presented and analyzed using SPSS27, with t-tests employed to test the hypotheses stated. The findings of the study revealed significant levels of malnutrition among children under five years visiting Faith Mediplex Hospital, with socio-economic factors such as parental income, education level, and family size showing notable associations with malnutrition prevalence. Additionally, the existing nutritional interventions implemented at the hospital were found to be ineffective in reducing the prevalence of malnutrition among the children. These findings underscore the need for targeted interventions addressing socio-economic disparities and enhancing the effectiveness of nutritional programs in healthcare facilities catering to pediatric populations. In conclusion, the study highlights the pressing issue of malnutrition among children under five years and underscores the importance of addressing socio-economic determinants and improving nutritional interventions to combat this public health challenge effectively. Based on the findings, several recommendations are proposed, including the implementation of comprehensive socio-economic support programs, enhancing healthcare infrastructure and services, and strengthening nutritional education and counseling initiatives. These recommendations aim to address the multifaceted nature of malnutrition and promote better health outcomes among vulnerable pediatric populations.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
Malnutrition remains a significant public health issue worldwide, particularly affecting children under five years of age. This condition encompasses both undernutrition and overnutrition, which can lead to severe health problems and hinder the growth and development of children. Undernutrition, characterized by stunting, wasting, and underweight, is especially prevalent in low-income regions where access to adequate nutrition is limited. Overnutrition, on the other hand, can result from excessive intake of calories and poor dietary quality, leading to obesity and related non-communicable diseases (Kang & Kim, 2019). Both forms of malnutrition pose serious risks to the physical and cognitive development of young children.
The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies malnutrition as a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among young children, particularly in developing countries. Malnutrition during early childhood can have long-term impacts, including impaired cognitive function, increased susceptibility to infections, and higher risk of chronic diseases later in life (Jude, Chukwunedum, & Egbuna, 2019). Effective strategies to combat malnutrition must address both immediate nutritional needs and underlying factors such as food security, healthcare access, and maternal health.
Factors contributing to malnutrition include poverty, inadequate dietary intake, poor maternal health, and lack of access to healthcare services. Poverty is a critical determinant as it limits the ability of families to purchase nutritious foods and access essential health services (Kavosi et al., 2020). Inadequate dietary intake, resulting from insufficient food quantity and poor dietary diversity, exacerbates the problem. Poor maternal health, including conditions such as anemia and malnutrition during pregnancy, also contributes to poor nutritional outcomes in children.
In Nigeria, the prevalence of malnutrition among children under five is alarmingly high, with various regions experiencing different levels of severity. Rural areas often face higher rates of malnutrition due to lower socio-economic status, limited healthcare infrastructure, and inadequate water and sanitation facilities (Mdimu et al., 2020). Urban areas, despite better access to services, are not immune to malnutrition, especially in densely populated and economically disadvantaged neighborhoods.

1.2 Statement of Problem

This gap in knowledge hinders the development of effective, localized interventions to address malnutrition in urban settings.

For instance, while rural areas are often characterized by food insecurity and poor access to healthcare, urban areas might deal with issues related to food quality and healthcare utilization patterns (Mdimu et al., 2020). This distinction is crucial as the underlying causes and effective interventions may differ significantly between rural and urban contexts.
Furthermore, the role of maternal health literacy in influencing child nutritional status is not well-documented in the context of Nigerian urban centers. 1.3 Objectives of the Study
The primary objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of malnutrition among children under five years of age visiting the pediatric clinic at Faith Mediplex Hospital. The specific objectives were:
- To determine the proportion of children under five years visiting Faith Mediplex Hospital who were diagnosed with malnutrition.
- To identify the socio-economic and demographic factors associated with malnutrition among these children.
- To assess the effectiveness of existing nutritional interventions in reducing the prevalence of malnutrition among the children attending the clinic.
1.4 Research Questions
To guide this study, the following research questions were formulated:
- What was the prevalence of malnutrition among children under five years visiting the pediatric clinic at Faith Mediplex Hospital?
- What socio-economic and demographic factors were associated with malnutrition in these children?
- How effective were the existing nutritional interventions in addressing malnutrition among the children attending the clinic?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Based on the research questions, the following hypotheses were proposed:
- The prevalence of malnutrition among children under five years visiting the pediatric clinic at Faith Mediplex Hospital is not significantly high.
- Socio-economic and demographic factors such as parental income, education level, and family size are not significantly associated with the prevalence of malnutrition among these children.
- The existing nutritional interventions implemented at Faith Mediplex Hospital are not effective in reducing the prevalence of malnutrition among children under five years.

1.7 Scope of the Study
The study was conducted at Faith Mediplex Hospital, focusing on children under five years visiting the pediatric clinic. It covered a period from January 2022 to December 2022. The study examined the prevalence of malnutrition, the socio-economic and demographic factors associated with it, and the effectiveness of nutritional interventions. Data were collected from medical records, patient interviews, and hospital databases to ensure a comprehensive analysis.

Malnutrition: A condition resulting from an imbalanced diet where certain nutrients are lacking, in excess, or in the wrong proportions, adversely affecting the individual’s health.
Undernutrition: A form of malnutrition where there is an insufficient intake of energy and nutrients to meet an individual’s needs for growth and development.
Overnutrition: A form of malnutrition where there is an excessive intake of energy and nutrients, leading to obesity and other related health issues.
