INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The rapid expansion of internet penetration and smartphone ownership across Nigeria has fundamentally altered the way businesses reach and persuade consumers. Traditional marketing approaches, which relied heavily on print, radio, and television advertising, have increasingly given way to digital marketing strategies such as social media marketing, email marketing, search engine marketing, and influencer marketing. These digital channels offer businesses the ability to reach targeted audiences at lower cost, interact with consumers in real time, and gather behavioural data that can be used to refine marketing messages and offers.
Within the Nigerian e-commerce space, digital marketing has become central to customer acquisition and retention strategies. Empirical studies have found that digital marketing has a positive and statistically significant effect on consumer purchase decisions among Nigerian small and medium enterprises, suggesting that businesses that actively deploy digital marketing tools are more likely to influence buying behaviour than those that do not (Gahlot & Rani, 2023). Similarly, research on social media marketing and online super stores in Lagos has highlighted those platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) as significant tools shaping how Nigerian consumers discover products, compare options, and ultimately decide to purchase. Trust remains a recurring theme in this literature, with studies noting that consumer confidence in a platform’s authenticity and reliability directly affects the extent to which digital marketing translates into actual purchases, particularly given persistent concerns about online fraud in the Nigerian e-commerce environment.
Jumia Nigeria, as the country’s leading online retail platform, has built much of its customer acquisition strategy around digital marketing. The platform relies on a combination of social media campaigns, targeted promotions, influencer partnerships, and a direct sales agent network (JForce) to reach consumers across different demographic and geographic segments. Research specifically examining Jumia’s marketing approach in Calabar found a significant correlation between customer trust and buying behaviour, as well as between perceived value, customer reviews, and purchasing behaviour, with the authors recommending broader use of social media testimonials to influence prospective buyers (Egbe et al., 2024). Broader studies on digital marketing among Nigerian SMEs similarly found that digital marketing strategies, including social media components, had a significant positive effect on consumer purchase decisions (Ilesanmi, 2022).
Despite this growing body of evidence, digital marketing effectiveness in the Nigerian context continues to be shaped by structural challenges such as limited digital literacy, inconsistent internet access, and consumer scepticism toward online transactions, all of which can dilute the impact of otherwise well-designed digital campaigns. It is against this backdrop that the present study examines the effect of digital marketing strategies on consumer purchase decisions using Jumia Nigeria as a case study.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Nigerian e-commerce platforms, including Jumia, have invested significantly in digital marketing in the hope of driving higher conversion rates and stronger customer loyalty. However, e-commerce adoption and online purchase rates in Nigeria remain comparatively low relative to the size of the country’s internet user base, and factors such as low trust, inconsistent product delivery experiences, and price sensitivity continue to constrain the extent to which digital marketing efforts translate into actual purchase decisions.
While several studies have examined digital marketing’s general effect on consumer behaviour among Nigerian SMEs and online retailers, there is comparatively limited firm-specific evidence isolating which particular digital marketing strategies social media marketing, email marketing, search engine marketing, or influencer marketing most strongly influence consumer purchase decisions specifically at Jumia Nigeria. Without such focused evidence, marketing managers at Jumia and similar platforms may struggle to prioritise resource allocation across competing digital channels. This study seeks to close this gap by empirically examining the effect of specific digital marketing strategies on consumer purchase decisions at Jumia Nigeria.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.3.1 General Objective
The general objective of this study is to examine the effect of digital marketing strategies on consumer purchase decisions at Jumia Nigeria.
1.3.2 Specific Objectives
The specific objectives of the study are to:
- examine the effect of social media marketing on consumer purchase decisions at Jumia Nigeria;
- determine the influence of email marketing on consumer purchase decisions at Jumia Nigeria;

- What is the influence of email marketing on consumer purchase decisions at Jumia Nigeria?
- What is the effect of search engine marketing on consumer purchase decisions at Jumia Nigeria?
- What is the effect of influencer marketing on consumer purchase decisions at Jumia Nigeria?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
The following null hypotheses were formulated to guide the study:
- H₀1: Social media marketing has no significant effect on consumer purchase decisions at Jumia Nigeria.
- H₀2: Email marketing has no significant influence on consumer purchase decisions at Jumia Nigeria.
- H₀3: Search engine marketing has no significant effect on consumer purchase decisions at Jumia Nigeria.
- H₀4: Influencer marketing has no significant effect on consumer purchase decisions at Jumia Nigeria.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will benefit the marketing management of Jumia Nigeria by providing evidence on which digital marketing strategies most effectively influence consumer purchase decisions, thereby supporting more efficient allocation of marketing budgets. Other e-commerce operators in Nigeria will find the findings useful as a benchmark for evaluating their own digital marketing strategies. Consumers, in turn, may gain from more relevant and less intrusive marketing communications informed by evidence-based practice. Policymakers and consumer protection agencies may also draw on the findings when considering regulations relevant to online trade and digital advertising. Finally, the study will contribute to the academic literature on digital marketing effectiveness within emerging e-commerce markets and provide a foundation for further research.
1.7 Scope of the Study
This study is focused on examining the effect of digital marketing strategies on consumer purchase decisions, using Jumia Nigeria as a case study. The content scope covers social media marketing, email marketing, search engine marketing, and influencer marketing as they relate to consumer purchase decisions. The study population comprises Jumia Nigeria customers and marketing personnel, with data collection focused on consumers within selected urban centres in Nigeria. The study covers recent digital marketing practices and consumer behaviour patterns over the past few years.
