THE IMPACT OF HEALTH EDUCATION TOWARDS COMPLIANCE OF IMMUNIZATION AMONG CHILDREN 0-5 YEARS IN AHOADA GENERAL HOSPITAL, RIVERS STATE
Abstract
The study addressed the impact of health education on immunization compliance among children aged 0-5 years in Ahoada General Hospital, Rivers State, Nigeria, utilizing a quantitative survey research design. A structured questionnaire was devised to collect data from a sample of 120 respondents, comprising caregivers of children aged 0-5 years who attended immunization services at the hospital. Employing SPSS27, the collected data were analyzed, utilizing descriptive statistics and inferential analyses, including t-tests, to explore the relationships and associations between variables. The findings of the study revealed significant enhancements in awareness, knowledge, and compliance with immunization schedules among caregivers subsequent to their engagement in health education programs. Specifically, caregivers reported heightened awareness of the significance of immunization, improved understanding of recommended vaccines and immunization schedules, and increased adherence to vaccination requirements for their children. These findings underscored the effectiveness of health education interventions in empowering caregivers to make informed decisions regarding their child’s vaccination, consequently contributing to higher immunization coverage within the community. In conclusion, the study emphasized the pivotal role of health education in promoting immunization compliance among children aged 0-5 years. By augmenting awareness, enhancing knowledge, and fostering positive attitudes towards immunization, health education interventions played a crucial role in ensuring that children received timely and appropriate vaccines to prevent vaccine-preventable diseases. Recommendations were made for tailoring health education programs to caregivers’ needs, leveraging diverse communication channels, and collaborating with community stakeholders. Furthermore, continuous evaluation and monitoring of program effectiveness were advocated to identify areas for improvement and ensure sustained success in promoting immunization compliance and public health outcomes.

- To evaluate the impact of health education on improving the knowledge of caregivers regarding the immunization schedule and vaccines recommended for children aged 0-5 years in Ahoada General Hospital.
- To examine the association between exposure to health education interventions and the level of immunization compliance among children aged 0-5 years in Ahoada General Hospital.
1.4 Research Questions
The following research questions were asked:
- What is the level of awareness among caregivers regarding the importance of immunization for children aged 0-5 years in Ahoada General Hospital?

1.5 Research Hypotheses
The following hypotheses were tested:
- There is no significant difference in awareness about the importance of immunization among caregivers before and after exposure to health education programs.
- There is no significant association between exposure to health education interventions and caregivers’ knowledge of the immunization schedule and recommended vaccines.
- There is no significant relationship between exposure to health education interventions and the level of immunization compliance among children aged 0-5 years.
