THE FACTORS INFLUENCING THE UNDERUTILIZATION OF FAMILY PLANNING SERVICES, FOCUSING ON SOCIOCULTURAL, ECONOMIC, AND HEALTH-RELATED DETERMINANTS

Abstract

This study examined the factors influencing the underutilization of family planning services, focusing on sociocultural, economic, and health-related determinants. A cross-sectional descriptive research design was adopted, involving a sample size of 200 respondents. Data were collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests to determine associations between variables. The findings revealed that sociocultural factors significantly influenced family planning utilization, with 65% of respondents acknowledging the impact of community opinions. Economic constraints were also a barrier, as 45% had avoided family planning services due to cost. Additionally, women with underlying health conditions showed lower utilization rates, highlighting health-related concerns as a deterrent. The study concluded that sociocultural norms, economic limitations, and health-related fears contribute to the underutilization of family planning services. It recommended targeted awareness campaigns to address myths and misconceptions, cost-reduction strategies to improve affordability, and enhanced male partner involvement in family planning decision-making. Further recommendations included improved service delivery and the integration of digital health interventions to enhance access to family planning services. Addressing these barriers is essential in promoting the effective utilization of family planning services and improving reproductive health outcomes.
