EVALUATION OF SOCIO CULTURAL VARIABLES AND IT’S IMPACT ON MARITAL STABILITY AMONG COUPLE

Abstract

This study investigated the impact of socio-cultural variables on marital stability among couples in Lagos State. A quantitative survey research design was adopted, and a structured questionnaire was administered to a sample of 133 respondents to gather data on how factors such as religion, ethnicity, communication, and socio-economic status influenced marital stability. The data were analyzed using frequency tables, simple percentages, mean and standard deviation, while t-tests were used to test the hypotheses formulated for the study. The findings indicated that religion played a significant role in enhancing marital stability, with most respondents agreeing that religious beliefs and practices contributed positively to relationship stability. Ethnicity was found to have an influence on marital success, with respondents noting that cultural backgrounds could either strengthen or challenge marriages. Effective communication was identified as another critical factor in maintaining marital stability, with couples who communicated openly and frequently reporting greater satisfaction. Socio-economic status also had a substantial impact on marital success, as couples from higher socio-economic backgrounds tended to experience higher levels of marital satisfaction. Additionally, socio-cultural variables collectively impacted marital stability, emphasizing the importance of understanding these factors in marital dynamics. The study concluded that socio-cultural factors are crucial in determining marital stability, and recommended that couples, counselors, and policymakers should consider these variables when addressing marital issues. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

Marriage, as a cornerstone of human society, has traditionally been shaped by a variety of socio-cultural variables. These include religion, ethnicity, communication practices, and socio-economic status, all of which have significant implications for the endurance and quality of marital relationships over time. As a social institution, marriage reflects the values and expectations of the societies in which it is practiced, demonstrating its dynamic and culturally embedded nature (Gallagher, 2022).

In traditional African societies, marriage was more than a union between two individuals; it symbolized a connection between families and communities. This bond was often reinforced by cultural norms and extended family structures that provided emotional and material support. However, in urbanized regions such as Lagos State, the socio-cultural fabric of marriage has undergone significant transformations. Urbanization, globalization, and shifting societal norms have diluted traditional influences, leading to an environment where diverse and, at times, conflicting cultural values coexist (Gottman & Silver, 2019).

Religion plays a pivotal role in shaping marital stability. For instance, couples who share the same religious beliefs often find their relationships strengthened by shared values and spiritual practices. Conversely, interfaith marriages can face challenges arising from differing religious traditions and expectations. The impact of religion on marriage underscores the need to consider spiritual compatibility as a critical factor in fostering stable unions (Huston, Neihuis, & Smith, 2019).

Ethnicity, another critical socio-cultural variable, influences marriage in complex ways. While intra-ethnic marriages often benefit from shared cultural norms and traditions, inter-ethnic marriages may encounter challenges, including family acceptance and cultural integration. The growing prevalence of inter-ethnic marriages in Lagos highlights the need to explore how couples navigate these cultural differences to achieve marital stability (Buss & Others, 2020).

Effective communication is a cornerstone of marital stability, enabling couples to address conflicts, express needs, and foster understanding. Poor communication, on the other hand, is a major contributor to marital discord and eventual breakdowns. This study focuses on the interplay of these socio-cultural variables in shaping marital stability in Lagos State. 1.2 Statement of the Problem

Marital stability is an increasingly significant concern in contemporary societies, as rising rates of divorce, separation, and marital dissatisfaction continue to disrupt family units. While extensive research has been conducted on marriage dynamics globally, there are gaps in understanding how specific socio-cultural variables uniquely influence marital stability, particularly in culturally diverse and economically stratified contexts like Lagos State. The dynamic interplay of religion, ethnicity, communication, and socio-economic status in shaping marital outcomes remains underexplored, especially in regions where modernity intersects with deeply rooted traditional values (Hetherington et al., 2020).

One major gap is the lack of comprehensive studies on how interfaith marriages navigate religious differences. Existing research largely emphasizes the benefits of shared religious beliefs in fostering marital satisfaction but often overlooks the coping mechanisms and conflict resolution strategies employed by interfaith couples (Gottman & Declaire, 2021). In Lagos, where diverse religious practices coexist, understanding how interfaith couples achieve stability despite differing beliefs is crucial for addressing broader societal concerns related to marital instability.

Similarly, while studies on ethnicity and marital stability have highlighted the potential challenges of inter-ethnic marriages, such as cultural misunderstandings and family resistance, there is limited empirical evidence on how couples in ethnically diverse settings like Lagos State mitigate these challenges. For instance, the role of extended family dynamics and the cultural negotiation strategies employed by inter-ethnic couples are areas that warrant further investigation (Blanken, 2022).

Communication, a universally acknowledged determinant of marital success, also requires deeper exploration in this context. While poor communication is widely cited as a leading cause of marital breakdowns, the unique communication challenges faced by couples in Lagos State—where traditional and modern communication norms intersect—remain under-researched. Furthermore, studies seldom explore how communication styles vary across different socio-economic strata and their impact on marital outcomes (Epstein & Eidelson, 2021).

Socio-economic status, a critical factor influencing marital stability, is often studied in isolation rather than in conjunction with other variables. For example, while financial stress is a well-documented cause of marital dissatisfaction, the interaction between socio-economic disparities, power dynamics, and cultural expectations within marriages in Lagos remains largely unexamined (George, 2019).

Addressing these gaps is essential for understanding how socio-cultural variables collectively shape marital stability in Lagos State. By focusing on the interrelationships among these factors, this research seeks to provide nuanced insights that can inform targeted interventions and policy development aimed at strengthening marital unions (Sharp & Gangong, 2020).

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The major purpose of this study is to determine the impact of socio-cultural variables on marital stability in Lagos State.

Specific objectives include:

3. To assess the role of communication in promoting marital stability.
