KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUDE AND PRACTICES OF POST OPERATIVE NUTRITION AMONG ADULTS WITH SURGICAL EXPERIENCE IN FAITH MEDIPLEX

Abstract

This study investigated the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of postoperative nutrition among adults with surgical experience. Adopting a quantitative survey research design, a structured questionnaire was developed to collect data from a targeted sample of 120 respondents. The questionnaire encompassed questions addressing various aspects of postoperative nutrition, including knowledge levels, attitudes towards nutrition guidelines, adherence to recommended practices, and challenges faced during the recovery period. Data collection and analysis were facilitated using SPSS27, enabling a systematic presentation and examination of the gathered information. The study utilized a t-test to rigorously test the formulated hypotheses related to the correlation between knowledge levels, attitudes, and actual nutritional practices among the respondents. The analysis of data revealed significant findings regarding the positive correlation between knowledge levels and adherence to postoperative nutrition guidelines. Furthermore, attitudes towards postoperative nutrition were found to significantly influence actual nutritional practices during the recovery period among adults with surgical experience. These results shed light on the importance of education and mindset in fostering better nutritional outcomes post-surgery. In conclusion, the study underscores the critical role of postoperative nutrition in enhancing recovery outcomes among adults with surgical experience. It emphasizes the need for tailored patient education programs, healthcare provider training, and behavioral support interventions to promote optimal nutritional practices during the recovery phase. The findings also highlight the importance of regular follow-up and monitoring, cultural sensitivity, and continuous research efforts to improve postoperative care standards and patient well-being. Based on these insights, several recommendations are proposed, including the development of personalized educational materials, integration of behavioral support components, and fostering a culture of research-driven improvement in postoperative nutrition practices. These recommendations aim to guide future initiatives and contribute to enhanced patient outcomes and satisfaction in surgical settings.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1       Background to the Study

Nutrition plays a crucial role in postoperative recovery, particularly among adults who have undergone surgical procedures. The period following surgery is characterized by increased nutritional needs to support healing, tissue repair, and immune function (Cepeda-Lopez et al., 2021). After surgery, the body requires additional nutrients to aid in recovery and repair. This period demands higher intake of proteins, vitamins, and minerals to facilitate healing of tissues, strengthen the immune system, and restore overall health. Adequate nutrition helps manage inflammation, supports wound healing, and ensures that the body’s energy needs are met during this critical time. Proper nutrition is vital during this phase to facilitate optimal recovery and prevent complications. Unfortunately, studies have shown that many individuals do not receive adequate nutrition during this critical period, which can lead to potential complications and delayed recovery (Bozzetti et al., 2017).

Inadequate nutrition post-surgery can have significant consequences on patient outcomes. It can impair wound healing, increase the risk of infections, and prolong hospital stays (Bjerrum et al., 2021). Inadequate nutrition after surgery can negatively impact patient recovery in several ways. When the body doesn’t receive the necessary nutrients, wound healing can be delayed because the body lacks the building blocks required for tissue repair. Additionally, poor nutrition can weaken the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight off infections. As a result, patients may experience longer hospital stays due to complications and a slower recovery process. Proper nutrition is therefore crucial for optimizing recovery and minimizing these risks. Moreover, poor nutrition can compromise the body’s ability to fight off infections and can lead to a weakened immune system, further complicating the recovery process (Burton & Mazerolle, 2021). Poor nutrition can weaken the immune system by depriving it of essential nutrients that are crucial for maintaining immune function. Without adequate vitamins, minerals, proteins, and other nutrients, the body’s ability to produce and mobilize immune cells and antibodies is diminished. This reduced immune response makes it more difficult for the body to effectively combat infections, leading to a higher risk of illness and complications. As a result, the overall recovery process is further complicated, potentially prolonging illness and delaying healing. Proper nutrition supports a robust immune system, which is essential for a successful recovery. Therefore, ensuring proper nutrition is crucial to support the body’s healing mechanisms and promote a faster recovery.

The lack of adequate nutrition during the postoperative period can be attributed to various factors, including limited knowledge and awareness among healthcare providers and patients regarding postoperative nutrition practices (Department of Health New York, 1999). Nurses, for example, may have varying levels of knowledge and attitudes towards nutrition, which can impact the nutritional care they provide to patients (Barker et al., 2021). Training programs aimed at improving nurses’ knowledge and attitudes towards nutrition have been shown to positively impact patient outcomes (Bjerrum et al., 2021). Training programs designed to enhance nurses’ understanding of nutrition and their attitudes towards its importance can lead to better patient outcomes. When nurses are well-trained in nutrition, they are more likely to recognize the critical role that adequate nutrition plays in patient recovery and overall health. This improved knowledge enables them to provide more informed nutritional advice, identify and address nutritional deficiencies, and implement effective dietary plans. A positive attitude towards nutrition can lead to more proactive and compassionate care, fostering better communication with patients about their dietary needs. Ultimately, these factors contribute to improved patient outcomes by supporting effective healing, reducing complications, and promoting overall well-being.

Furthermore, cultural beliefs and practices can also influence postoperative nutrition practices (Chew et al., 2021). For instance, certain cultural beliefs may dictate specific dietary restrictions or preferences, which may not align with optimal postoperative nutrition guidelines. Understanding and addressing these cultural factors are essential for providing tailored nutritional care to patients from diverse backgrounds (Harizah, 2023).

Educating patients about the importance of proper nutrition during the postoperative period is crucial for promoting positive outcomes (Department of Statistics Malaysia, 2021). Patients’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding nutrition play a significant role in their ability to adhere to recommended dietary guidelines (Fabrigar et al., 2020). Effective patient education programs can empower individuals to make informed dietary choices that support their recovery and overall well-being (Elizabeth, 2023).

In addition to education, healthcare systems and policies also play a role in ensuring optimal postoperative nutrition care (Hawkes, 2023). Healthcare systems and policies are crucial in ensuring that patients receive optimal nutritional care after surgery. These systems and policies can establish guidelines for nutritional assessments, provide protocols for dietary management, and ensure that resources are available for proper nutrition. They help standardize care practices across healthcare settings, ensuring that all patients receive consistent and evidence-based nutritional support.

For instance, healthcare policies may require routine nutritional screenings for postoperative patients, mandate the use of specific dietary interventions, or support the availability of specialized nutrition products. Systems might also provide training for healthcare professionals on best practices in nutrition care or allocate funding for nutrition-related resources. By integrating these aspects into healthcare systems, policies help create an environment where nutritional care is prioritized, ultimately improving patient recovery and outcomes. They can support initiatives like standardized nutritional assessments, funding for nutrition programs, and education for healthcare professionals. By setting clear policies and standards, they help ensure that best practices are followed consistently across healthcare settings.

Patients also play a crucial role by actively participating in their own care. They should be educated about the importance of nutrition in recovery and follow dietary recommendations provided by their healthcare team. Their engagement and adherence to nutritional advice contribute significantly to positive outcomes. 1.2       Statement of Problem

The gaps in understanding postoperative nutrition among adults with surgical experience are evident across several key areas. Firstly, there remains a significant knowledge gap regarding the specific nutritional needs required for optimal postoperative recovery (Bozzetti et al., 2017). While it’s acknowledged that increased nutritional support is necessary for healing and immune function, there’s a lack of precise guidelines tailored to different surgical procedures and patient profiles. This lack of clarity can lead to inconsistent nutritional recommendations and potentially suboptimal care.

Secondly, variations in healthcare providers’ knowledge and attitudes towards postoperative nutrition contribute to inconsistencies in care quality (Barker et al., 2021). Nurses and physicians play pivotal roles in patient education and dietary support, yet their training and education levels in nutritional aspects may not be standardized across healthcare settings (Bjerrum et al., 2021). This variability can directly impact the adequacy and effectiveness of nutritional interventions during the recovery period.

Cultural and socioeconomic factors also significantly influence postoperative nutrition practices but are often overlooked in healthcare settings (Chew et al., 2021). Cultural beliefs, dietary preferences, and access to resources can profoundly impact patients’ ability to adhere to recommended nutritional guidelines. Failing to address these factors can result in disparities in nutritional care outcomes and hinder recovery efforts, especially for marginalized or vulnerable patient populations.

Additionally, the transition from hospital care to home settings presents challenges in maintaining consistent and adequate nutrition (Department of Health New York, 1999). Patients may encounter barriers such as limited access to nutritious foods, financial constraints, and insufficient follow-up support from healthcare providers. These challenges can lead to a discontinuity in nutritional care, potentially compromising recovery outcomes and increasing the risk of complications.

These gaps collectively highlight the need for targeted interventions and comprehensive strategies to enhance postoperative nutrition knowledge, improve healthcare provider training, address cultural and socioeconomic influences, and establish effective continuity of nutritional care. By addressing these gaps, we can optimize patient outcomes, reduce complications, and enhance the overall quality of care for individuals recovering from surgical procedures.

1.3       Objectives of the Study

The specific objectives of this study include:

  1. To assess the knowledge levels of adults with surgical experience regarding postoperative nutrition practices.
  2. To explore the attitudes of adults with surgical experience towards postoperative nutrition recommendations.
  3. To investigate the actual practices related to postoperative nutrition among adults with surgical experience.

1.4       Research Questions

The following research questions were asked:

  1. What is the level of knowledge among adults with surgical experience regarding postoperative nutrition?
  2. What are the attitudes of adults with surgical experience towards postoperative nutrition recommendations?
  3. What are the common practices related to postoperative nutrition among adults with surgical experience?

1.5       Research Hypotheses

The following hypotheses were tested:

  1. There is no positive correlation between knowledge levels and adherence to postoperative nutrition guidelines among adults with surgical experience.
  2. Attitudes towards postoperative nutrition does not significantly influence actual nutritional practices during the recovery period among adults with surgical experience.

1.6       Significance of the Study

1.7       Scope of the Study

This study focuses on adults (aged 18 years and above) with prior surgical experience within Faith Mediplex, exploring their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding postoperative nutrition.

Knowledge Levels: Refers to the understanding and awareness of recommended postoperative nutrition practices among individuals with surgical experience.

Attitudes: Refers to the opinions, beliefs, and perceptions of individuals with surgical experience towards postoperative nutrition guidelines and recommendations.

Practices: Refers to the actual behaviors and actions related to nutrition that individuals with surgical experience adopt during the postoperative recovery period.

Postoperative Nutrition: Refers to dietary recommendations and nutritional interventions specifically tailored for individuals recovering from surgical procedures.

Surgical Experience: Refers to individuals who have undergone surgical procedures in the past and are currently in the recovery or postoperative phase.

Healthcare Providers: Refers to professionals involved in the delivery of healthcare services, including physicians, nurses, and dietitians, among others.
