Introduction
1.1 Background of the study
In December 2019, there were emergence of some cases of the corona virus that originated in Wuhan City according to the World Health Organization (WHO, 2020). The causative pathogen was named the novel corona-virus because it was the first of its kind (Huang et al., 2020). The corona virus disease outbreak also known as COVID-19 impacted negatively on all the sector of the economy (Stevens et al., 2020). Therefore, the educational sector was no exception. The outbreak of this infectious disease led to a global school closure (Bhagat et al., 2020). This was due to the mode of transmission of the corona virus. So many safety measures were adhered to, in order to reduce the spread of the disease (Malhotra et al., 2020).
The discovery of this new virus mandates it for China to demonstrate to rest of the world how vigilant and prepared they are to prevent the global spread of a new infection and protect both global health and the wellbeing of their own peoples. The countries of the region need to be vigilant and put in place enhanced public health surveillance plan for identifying suspected cases using WHO’s recommended case definition and investigation protocol (Malik et al., 2021). The US, UK, Germany, Italy and even Nigeria are currently battling with COVID-19 pandemic. It has taken a great concern at the governmental and public levels as it led to a number of human infections and deaths. Since February 12, to March 26, 2020; the total number of infected cases with COVID-19, as reported by worldometers, reached 478,446 of global cases of which 21,524 cases have died and a total of global recovery stands at 115,668.
COVID-19 pandemic has affected all levels of the education system (Nicola et al, 2020). Educational institutions around the world (in 192 countries) have either temporarily closed or implemented localized closures affecting about 1.7 billion student populations worldwide (UNESCO 2020). Many universities around the world either postponed or canceled all campus activities to minimize gatherings and hence decrease the transmission of the virus. However, these measures lead to higher economical, medical, and social implications on both undergraduate and postgraduate communities (Nicola et al, 2020; Esposito and Principi, 2020).
The COVID-19 pandemic led to a sudden shutdown of schools in 2020, affecting more than 1.6 billion students in over 190 countries (UNESCO, 2020). The shutdown required teachers, students and parents to rapidly adopt to a new homeschooling situation, lasting from a few weeks to several months, depending on governmental policy.
In Nigeria, COVID-19 pandemic affected their educational sector, as recognized by the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Study revealed that Covid-19 has spread exponentially in so many countries which made the government to enforce a law for strict quarantine measures, social distancing, use of facemask, and personal hygiene using a sanitizer (Nazar et al., 2020).
Due to the role education plays in the growth of the economy, it is regarded as a pillar to the development of a country. The education sector has faced different challenges such as change of curriculum, closing date and so on (Al-Quteimat et al., 2020). All these led to the researcher carrying out research on the impact of COVID-19 on the students of Nigeria. This topic was selected because students were regarded as the people that suffered the most during the pandemic period. For instance, students had to pause offline education and adopt the online educations system thereby, losing motivation to study. According to a report carried out by Nemati et al. (2020), the performance of students after the Covid-19 pandemic dropped as compared to previous years. Ever since, Covid-19 has deeply affected schools’ academic activities and interrupted the income inflow for schools and teachers. The pandemic unmasked substantial inequities in the education sector but private and non-governmental sectors have been tirelessly working to salvage this situation (Amorighoye, 2020).
1.2 Statement of the problem
The outbreak of corona virus disease (COVID-19) pandemic in Nigeria has increased the level of tension and anxiety among citizens in the country. The virus unlike other cases we have had in this country is highly transmittable with severe signs and symptoms.
Due to the suspension of classroom teaching in many colleges and universities, a switch to online teaching for undergraduate and graduate students becomes effective [reviewed in (Sahu, 2020; Yamin, 2020)]. This form of learning provides an alternative way to minimize either the contact between students themselves or between the students and lecturers (Pragholapati, 2020). However, many students have no access to online teaching due to a lack of either the means or the instruments due to the economical and digital divide (UNESCO 2020).
The economy of countries were in high decline. Private school owners found it difficult to survive during the period of the pandemic because schools were in total shut-down to reduce to rate of the virus transmission. There was no means of income. Teachers were all at their homes with no means of earning because they were not being paid salaries, many teachers had to earn income by engaging in home lessons for survival. Students were at home during these period and most students could not engage on online classes due to their parents were not financially buoyant to provide them with the necessary gadgets for the classes. Those that could not engage in online classes were not able to learn and they lag behind in their studies and academic programme. This study seeks to investigate into the impact of Coronavirus on private school owner, economy, teachers and students. Against the backdrop of this study, the present study therefore focuses on the impact of Covid-19 on private schools’ patronage in Ado Ekiti State.
1.3 Objectives of the study
The main objective of the study is to examine the impact of Covid-19 on private schools’ patronage in Ado Ekiti State.
Given below are the stated specific objectives of the study:
- To establish the knowledge of Covid-19 among selected students in Ado Ekiti State.
- To examine the impact of Covid-19 on the education and patronage of private schools in Ado Ekiti State.
- To assess the preventive measures for Covid-19 among the students in Ado Ekiti State.

1.5 Significance of the study
The study on the effect of corona virus disease (COVID-19) on the Nigeria economy will be of immense benefit to all the Nigeria citizens, the health sector, and the federal government of Nigeria. The study will explore the prevalence of corona virus disease (COVID-19), the causes, and the effect of the corona virus disease (COVID-19) schools in Nigeria. The study will educate the masses on the mode of transmission of the corona virus disease (COVID-19) and the preventive measures to be adopted. The study will educate the Nigeria government on the policy implementation to curb the prevalence of the corona virus disease (COVID-19) and how to improve schools in Nigeria during this period. The study will serve as a repository of information to other researchers that desire to carry out similar research on the above topic. Finally the study will contribute to the body of the existing literature on the effect of corona virus disease (COVID-19) on schools in Nigeria
1.6 Scope of the study
This study was carried out on the impact of Covid-19 on private schools’ patronage in Ado Ekiti State. The study was limited to Ado Ekiti State as the case study.
