1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the study
As a whole, leadership is a big topic. It has a wide range of applications and is a diverse field of study. As a result, leadership may be observed at all levels of connections, from family to community to organization, and so on. Many other branches exist within this subject, including natural leadership and political and spiritual leadership.
There are different methods to lead in a church. Pastoral leadership is one example. It’s tough since people aren’t obligated to follow or obey you under this kind of leadership. Although men are given the duty of guiding others, they do it deliberately and freely in surrender to the Ultimate Being-God. In other words, they follow His ideals and are conscious that they will be held accountable for their leadership in the end.
Because Christ is the Chief Shepherd, and pastoral leaders are the under-shepherds, pastoral leadership is a collective endeavor. Accordingly, pastoral leaders must turn to the Chief Shepherd for all their needs in order to care for the flock. Relationships will now determine how effective Pastoral Leaders are at shepherding the flock. This includes their ability to relate with Christ, the Chief Shepherd, as well as their ability to relate to themselves as under shepherds, as well as their ability to relate to the flocks who receive whatever Christ the Chief Shepherd gives them in return.
In view of the above, the relationships of pastoral leaders now become the pivotal point in which everything revolves. Therefore, readers of this research work should expect to get details of what these relationships should be, their correlation with the growth of the Church; how they are in Christ faith Church Uyo and how they concerns her growth.
1.2 Statement of Problem
More than a decade ago, the leadership expert John Maxwell, introduced two timeless ideologies into the leadership philosophies. He asserts that: 1. ―Leadership is influence-nothing more, nothing less.‖
(Maxwell, 16). 2. ―Everything rises and falls on leadership.‖ (Maxwell, 123).
If everything rises and falls on leadership, and leadership is influence, it will logically follows that everything rises and falls on influence. Applying this to Church growth, it will mean that the growth of the Church rises and falls on influence. But then, whose influence? The influence of the pastoral leader. Therefore, on the premise of the second assertion of Maxwell, it can be logically inferred that the growth of the Church rises and falls on pastoral leadership.
In view of this, the following questions will arise:
- In the context of Christ faith Church Uyo, how true is the fact that Church growth rises and falls on pastoral leadership?
- How is the growth of Christ faith Church Uyo?
- How is the pastoral leadership of Christ faith Church Uyo and how does it affect the growth of the Church?
These are what the researcher intends to investigate as well as proffer suggestions for possible solutions.
1.3 Purpose and Objective of Study
This research work is aim at investigating the influence of the pastoral leaders on the growth of the Church with regard to the case study. This will mean evaluating both pastoral leaders and members of the case study to show the effect of the influence of the pastoral leaders.
Therefore, at the end of this research, one should be able to know what pastoral leadership is, its cardinal factor, what Church growth is, the factors that influence it, its problems as well as get suggestions for possible solutions.
1.4 Significance of Study
This research work will be a working tool as long as the leadership of Christ Faith Church Uyo is concerned. This research work will be of immense significance to other congregations due to the fact that most congregations share the same fate when it comes to pastoral leadership and the problems of Church growth.
This material will also serve as a reference work to researchers in related fields of study as it is capable of gingering research into related fields of study.
1.5 Scope of Study
This research is delimited to pastoral leaders across Christ Faith Church Uyo. The members at the headquarter assembly were used as sample for the survey associated with members. Also, literatures that are related with pastoral leadership as well as Church growth and the different subjects under them were brought into close lights.
1.6 Limitations of Study
Certain shortcomings abound in the process of this research project. Most profound is the inability of the few oldest members of Christ Faith Church Uyo to recall certain historic information necessary for use. Insufficient materials for the work was a threat to the success of the study. Also, in the structuring of our questionnaires, questions with validity test could not be framed for factors like Integrity, diligence, personal hygiene, nutritional life and social image in both the pastoral leaders and members.
1. 7 Methodology
Information presented in this paper was gotten from different sources. First, there were surveys carried out among the pastoral leaders and members of the case study. Second, face-to-face interviews were conducted with qualified persons of the case study and recorded with writing materials. Third, the available documents of the case study and the researcher‘s knowledge of the case study which spans a period of fifteen years have also served as a great source of data. Last, data had also been collected from the internet as well as reading of relevant books and materials.
